What is Hyperflexion?
Hyperflexion is the extreme forward bending of the spine.
It is a type of flexion injury where the head or spine moves excessively forward.

Causes and Mechanisms
Hyperflexion injuries often result from sudden forceful impacts, such as those in a diving accident or whiplash-type injuries.
The force can cause posterior ligaments and joint capsules to rupture, leading to a partial or complete dislocation of vertebrae (anterior subluxation).

Symptoms and Injuries
Spinal Injuries:
Hyperflexion Sprain: A less severe injury involving partial dislocation and ligament damage.

Teardrop Fracture: A severe, highly devastating injury involving anterior vertebral fracture, disruption of ligaments, and often spinal cord injury.

Central Cord Syndrome: Compression of the spinal cord from hyperflexion can lead to this condition.

Neurological Symptoms:

Quadriplegia: Complete paralysis of all four limbs from severe injury.
Loss of Sensation: Loss of pain and temperature sensation from anterior spinal cord injury.

General Symptoms:
Localized pain and tenderness in the neck.
Muscle spasms and stiffness.
Headaches.
Reduced range of motion in the neck.
Nausea, vomiting, or blurred vision.
