Happy Children’s Day! ✨🎉

Yesterday was a day filled with smiles, joy, and celebration for all our special children of Aakaash Special School, MS Chellamuthu Trust & Research Foundation.

To mark this beautiful occasion, our children enjoyed a fun day out along with their teachers, while parents were also invited to share in the happiness. Everyone came together for a delightful lunch at Suvai Restaurant, an inclusive livelihood initiative of the Trust, created in partnership with Madurai Corporation and the Chennai Mission Foundation. Suvai not only serves delicious vegetarian meals but also provides meaningful employment opportunities for persons recovering from mental illness.

The celebrations continued with cake cutting, cheerful moments, and warm fellowship—making this Children’s Day truly memorable. Our children had a wonderful time, and their joy brightened the entire day!

Here’s to celebrating childhood, inclusion, and the joy our children bring into our lives every single day.

This Diwali, the spirit of light, hope, and togetherness shone brightly across all projects of M.S. Chellamuthu Trust & Research Foundation!

At our Chellamuthu Gardens Campus (Mental Health Care Centre at Alagarkovil) , residents celebrated with immense joy and enthusiasm over two vibrant days. The festivities included beautiful mehandi, colorful bangles, music, dance, and lively cultural performances — many wonderfully presented by the residents themselves! Their smiles and energy lit up the atmosphere, spreading the true essence of Diwali — joy, love, and inclusion.

At Aakaash Special School, our children looked radiant in their new festive dresses and celebrated with their teachers and staff. They enjoyed a special Diwali lunch, sweets, and crackers — all lovingly sponsored by our generous donors. The laughter and happiness of our children made the celebration truly heart warming!

Happy to Launch Suvai – A Vegetarian Restaurant with a Purpose!

We are delighted to announce the launch of Suvai, a vegetarian restaurant that was officially inaugurated on September 29, 2025, at the Jhansi Rani Park premises in Madurai. This meaningful initiative is a collaborative effort by Madurai Corporation, Chennai Mission Foundation, and the M.S. Chellamuthu Trust & Research Foundation

Suvai is more than just a restaurant. It’s a powerful step toward inclusion - offering employment and skill development opportunities for persons with mental illness, intellectual disabilities, and speech and hearing impairments.

We thank Chennai Mission Foundation, founded by Mr. Mahadevan of Hot Breads, for their unwavering commitment to empowering persons with disabilities. Their pioneering efforts, including Winners Bakery in Chennai, have inspired this initiative.

With Suvai, we take a small but heartfelt step toward creating a more inclusive, compassionate, and dignified world - one meal at a time.

On 22nd September 2025, our Aakaash Special School children had a joyful Diwali shopping experience at Pothys, Madurai. Our team arranged a visit for the children to select their Diwali dresses. For many of them, it was a new and happy experience. They were very attracted by the lights and colorful atmosphere of the store and enjoyed exploring, choosing colors they liked, and helping their friends pick their dresses.

We could see greater confidence in our children as they handled an unfamiliar environment with curiosity and joy. The day was filled with smiles, excitement, and heartfelt moments that we will always cherish.

We always give love and emotional support to our children, especially when they are in new places — and this time, Pothys, Madurai extended the same warmth to all our children and staff. We sincerely thank Pothys for their kindness and support throughout the visit.

This memorable outing was made possible with the support of Mr. Ilamathy, Mr.Vaithiyanathan and Mr. Paramasivam – our heartfelt thanks to them

Honouring a Legacy, Embracing a Vision for Compassionate Mental Health Care — 33rd Annual Day Celebration

On 16th September 2025, the M.S. Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation celebrated its 33rd Annual Day at Thillai Sivam Mahal, Thirupalai, Madurai - a date that holds deep meaning, as the Trust was founded on 16th September 1992, the birth anniversary of Er. Chellamuthu Ayya (16th September 1929).

Chellamuthu Ayya’s commitment to mental health began with a personal experience. His son, Mr. Krishnamoorthy, was affected by mental illness. Despite their best efforts, the family struggled to find proper treatment facilities. This painful journey made Ayya deeply aware of the lack of accessible mental health care, especially for families with limited resources.

In addition to his personal experience, Chellamuthu Ayya’s professional life as an Executive Engineer at PWD took him across various parts of Tamil Nadu. During his travels, he came across countless individuals and families silently suffering due to mental health issues - often without support, awareness, or treatment. These encounters left a lasting impression on him.

Driven by both personal and societal realities, and with his deep love for the community and its development, Ayya shared his heartfelt wish with his son, Dr. C. Ramasubramanian, a psychiatrist. He envisioned a holistic centre that would provide not only psychiatric treatment and rehabilitation, but also comprehensive, community-based care for the most vulnerable.

To fulfil this wish, Dr. Ramasubramanian established the Trust - planting the seed for what would become a pioneering mental health movement in the country.

What began as a small initiative has now grown into a powerful mission. With the support of friends, well-wishers, government bodies, and many like-minded individuals, the Trust has touched the lives of lakhs of people, providing hope, healing, and dignity.

This celebration also served as the best opportunity to honour all our dedicated staff members - those who have journeyed with us through the years, with unwavering commitment and compassion. Their tireless efforts, resilience, and belief in the mission of the Trust have been the backbone of our success. Every milestone achieved, and every life transformed, bears the imprint of their hard work and humanity.

The 33rd Annual Day brought together consultants, staff from various projects, and supporters. It was a day of reflection and renewal - a celebration of the journey so far and a reaffirmation of our vision for an inclusive and accessible mental health care system.
The spirit and legacy of Chellamuthu Ayya continue to live on - in every life the Trust touches, and in every step we take toward a more compassionate society.

Colours of Hope at Our Home

Meet Viswanathan and Jeyaseeli, two of our residents who recently discovered their passion for painting. Encouraged to explore their creativity, they now create beautiful artworks that are shared as heartfelt gifts with guests visiting our Trust. What began as a spark of curiosity has grown into a source of confidence, joy, and independence, proving how creativity can open doors to a brighter future.

This story comes from our Residential Home for Adolescents with Intellectual Disabilities, Madurai, one of the six free Homes managed by M.S. Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation. Established in 2008, the Home provides residential care and psychosocial rehabilitation for 40 homeless adolescents and young adults with intellectual disabilities.

Here, life is about dignity and growth. Residents receive therapeutic services such as counselling, occupational and creative therapy, yoga, meditation, horticulture, and more.. They also take part in skill training and vocational activities like paper cover making, doormat weaving, incense packing, and small industry-based jobs. Alongside, their daily routines nurture body, mind, and spirit through prayer, yoga, reading, games, and community participation.

Each handmade product or painting carries not just effort, but also pride and recognition – reminding us that with the right support, every individual’s hidden strengths can bloom. This journey of transformation is made possible by the dedication of our professional caretakers and staff, and the unwavering support of our well-wishers and donors. Together, we continue to nurture talents and create pathways for our residents to live with dignity, independence, and hope.

Annual Meet of Families of Persons with Mental Health Conditions – 2025

On 23rd August 2025, the Annual Meet of the Family Association of the Mentally Challenged was held at Jancy Marriage Hall, Vadipatti, bringing together families from Natham, Madurai East, Madurai West, Alanganallur, Kottampatti and Vadipatti blocks.

This gathering was part of the Community Mental Health Project (CMHP), an initiative of M.S. Chellamuthu Trust & Research Foundation, supported by Andheri-Hilfe, Germany ANDHERI HILFE

The project, launched in 2000, has been working to take mental health care to the doorsteps of rural families by focusing on awareness, early identification, treatment, rehabilitation and livelihood support.

In blocks in and around Madurai, we have identified more than 4,390 persons with mental health conditions. The Annual Day was attended by nearly 400 people, including families and caregivers, Beneficiaries who came together to share their struggles, strength and solidarity. Families spoke of the challenges they face daily poverty, lack of awareness, and stigma, often living in tiny houses with very limited resources. In most cases, it is women who shoulder the role of caregivers, many of them living alone while taking care of their loved ones with mental health conditions. Without proper treatment and support, families feel helpless, and patients are sometimes neglected or deserted.

Through CMHP, however, families are receiving a lifeline. The programme offers home-based and day care support, caregiver associations, treatment camps, physiotherapy and speech therapy for children, vocational training, and even small loans to start income-generating activities. Village-level volunteers play a key role in monitoring medicine intake and supporting households, ensuring that people are not left behind.

The annual meet was a day of sharing, learning and solidarity. It reminded everyone that mental health is not only about medicine but also about dignity, livelihood and acceptance. Families came together to break the silence around mental illness, to stand stronger as a community, and to dream of a future where every person with mental health conditions is given care, respect and the chance to live with dignity.

From Crisis to Care: The Journey of Mr. Santhosh kumar (Name changed)
A Story of Recovery, Reintegration & Purpose
By ECRC – MS Chellamuthu Trust & Research Foundation, Madurai

Mr. Santhosh kumar was just 30 years old when life as he knew it slipped away. Lost in the grip of severe mental illness, he wandered far from home, disconnected from his identity, his family, and even his name. When he was found, he was in a fragile state, disoriented, emotionally unstable, and unable to engage with the world around him. It was through the One Stop Centre that he was rescued and brought to a place where hope begins: the Emergency Care and Recovery Centre (ECRC) in Madurai.

At the time of admission, Mr. Santhosh kumar showed signs of deep psychological distress. He was confused, withdrawn, and lacked the ability to care for himself. The ECRC team, comprising psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, and caregivers, quickly stepped in to build a structured treatment plan tailored just for him.

He began with psychiatric care and medication, but his recovery extended far beyond clinical treatment. With the support of psychosocial therapy, daily routines, and engaging skill-building activities, he slowly began to rediscover parts of himself. He learned to trust again, speak again, and hope again.

Day by day, his condition improved. He started participating in group sessions, interacting with others, and taking interest in small tasks within the center. The team recognized his compassion and natural sense of responsibility and they encouraged it.
Meanwhile, the social work team helped him reclaim his identity. They supported him in renewing his Aadhar card and recovering his educational certificates. These documents were more than paperwork, they were keys to a future he had almost forgotten was possible.

As he grew stronger, a new role began to take shape. He was trained to become a Care Taker—not just as a job, but as a way to support others walking the same difficult path he once walked. Today, Mr. Santhosh kumar works at Udhavum Karangal, a home for homeless individuals with mental illness in Kariyapatti, Madurai.
He now earns ₹14,000 per month and has already saved ₹35,000 in his bank account. More importantly, he lives with purpose and dignity.

“I never thought I would live with purpose again. Today, I support people like me. That gives me strength.”
– Mr. Santhosh kumar

His journey—from crisis to care, from patient to caregiver, is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when timely intervention meets compassion and community support.

His recovery was made possible through our ECRC Project, supported by the Azim Premji Foundation and The The Banyan whose support continues to transform lives across Tamil Nadu.
At MS Chellamuthu Trust & Research Foundation, we continue to believe in holistic rehabilitation, not just treating illness, but restoring life.

Empowering Futures: India Post Financial Literacy Session at VTC -
Madurai

The Vocational Training Centre (VTC) at M.S. Chellamuthu Trust & Research Foundation (MSCTRF)—a training center for people who have recovered from mental illness—recently hosted a special financial literacy session in collaboration with India Post.
Facilitated by Mr. Jaiganesh, Postal Marketing Executive from the Thallakulam Post Office, the session aimed to educate VTC trainees and their families on India Post savings and investment schemes designed to promote financial independence and long-term security.

Key schemes covered included:
✅ Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (for the girl child)
✅ Public Provident Fund (PPF) & Recurring Deposit (RD)
✅ Postal Life Insurance
✅ Senior Citizens Savings Scheme

Mr. Jaiganesh emphasized the simplicity, safety, and accessibility of these government-backed options—especially valuable for families in semi-urban and rural areas.

The session went beyond just livelihood training, extending into essential areas like financial planning and management. Parents and guardians actively participated, raising questions on eligibility, documentation, and procedures. VTC staff supported understanding by translating and simplifying financial terms for trainees.

The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks from the VTC Coordinator, who said:
“Empowering our trainees isn’t only about employment—it’s also about teaching them and their families how to manage their earnings responsibly.”

At MSCTRF, we believe in a holistic approach to rehabilitation—one that equips individuals and families not just for work, but for life.
