The BrainLab Fibertracking Navigation 3.0, an advanced AI-enabled surgical navigation system from Germany, has been introduced at Hannah Joseph Hospital, Madurai, making it the first center in South Asia and India to adopt this groundbreaking technology, just a month after its global launch. While many leading centers globally are still using versions 1.0 and 2.0 of the Fibertracking Navigation System, this latest 3.0 version offers a significant technological leap forward.
This state-of-the-art system enhances precision in the removal of intra-axial brain tumors, such as gliomas and glioblastomas, by meticulously preserving critical fiber tracts that control essential functions like movement, speech, language, and memory. The real-time navigation provided by BrainLab Fibertracking, combined with Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) from the patient’s MRI, serves as a highly effective image-guided tool during brain tumor resections. This technology not only optimizes tumor removal but also ensures the preservation of brain functions, greatly facilitating subsequent treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy.
In the past month, three glioma (glioblastoma) surgeries were successfully performed at Hannah Joseph Hospital using the BrainLab Fibertracking 3.0, with all patients showing no neurological deficits post-surgery. This achievement underscores the advanced capabilities of this cutting-edge technology.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated team of neurosurgeons, neuro-anesthesiologists, neuroradiologists, biomedical engineers, neuro nurses, technical staff, and the BrainLab application specialists for their support. Special thanks to Ms. Vibha Singh, Mr. Aseem Malhotra of BrainLab India, and Mr. Thomas, President of BrainLab Germany, for their invaluable assistance in acquiring this next-generation technology.
While we have been utilizing BrainLab navigation for brain and spine surgeries since 2016, this AI-powered upgrade to version 3.0 keeps us at the forefront of global surgical advancements, ensuring we continue to deliver the highest standard of care.
