Gangwal started in 1986 and incorporated actually in 1987
I finished my CA in Nov 1987 exams
Started doing business since the age of 16, when i started my first business - a printing canvassing job. I used to get orders from customers for visiting cards, bill books, letter heads, college souvenirs etc. and give it the printing press - proof reading, actually printing in tradle printing machines, etc. Enjoyed - Kala printery - Nanu bhai Soda and crystal printers - Kedia and one prasad printers just adjoining alka restaurant opposite New era hotel. In 1981 when i was 18 years old, i started in partnership again, the first video library in malad. We were pioneers (the streak continued and continues) in our region and we used to rent our Video CDs (youngsters of today would not know what a video CD is) plus Video player (with/without TV) on hire. It was such great time for me when i used to get my share of profit for 1 1/2 years of around 3000 per month
Then i started my Articled trainee and as a part time also used to do part time accounting, book writing. After that, in 1986, i had a job of Rs. 2750 per month (to be raised on 4500 per month in 3 months time) with Solar Gems/Indiamco Gems (one of the 40 DTC sight holders - the ones authorised to import diamonds), but that i quit in 15 days time as i got an agency offer from my neighbour Mr. Jalan who had good contacts with Mr Kalyanpur who was the Regional Manager of Anil Starch Products Ltd. In 1987 my partner, a rich man, did not like the small time business that i was doing. But let me say here, he was instrumental in moulding my nature to suit marketing. He started withdrawing himself from Sept 87 giving me indirect hints to separate
In 1989 we separated. and i started commission business of Indian Maize and then Bharat Starch selling 1000s of tons of starch, maltodextrin, glucose, dextrose and of course sorbitol
In 1989 end, i took my first employee Sameer terdalkar at a salary which was practically higher than my monthly income. The period from 1986 until 1995 was the best period of my life. Visiting customers, at least 7-8 customers per day, bearing the sun, heat, humidity, bus, train rarely rickshaw etc. My God what a fun. And the orgasmic pleasure derived from getting orders, developing new relationships etc. Everything was electrifying, albeit sometimes frustrating too. But overall exhilarating. Until 1992 we took Gangwal to greater heights and it reached a turnover of around 2 crores plus on an annualised basis of 1992 - 93
At this point in time, my childhood and dear friends decided to form S A Chemicals ( a partnership firm with 1.7 lacs as equal equity input by each of us and that also over a period of 1 year). The entire stock and sell business of Gangwal as it is was transferred to S A Chemicals and Gangwal stopped all other activities. We started S A chemicals in my drawing room and from a group of 2-3 people, increased it to 14 people plus till 1998. My family must be saluted for bearing with me. I and my best days there. Going
In 1998 we purchased the current office and shifted to Udyog Bhawan. From 1998 onwards the progress of SAP was quite good. I won’t say, we became the best in the industry, but we did reasonably well for ourselves until now and will do so substantially well in future. In 2002 My father K C Jain retired from Ipca totally and due to some reasons too, i restarted Gangwal Chemicals Pvt. The mandate of Gangwal clear. Employ professionals, take new agencies, primarily Excipients, use the expertise of mine, K C Sir knowledge and a couple of people to
Get agencies for Gangwal
Get people in place to execute the job
Everything in Gangwal was from scratch (some people doubt this and do talk stupid about my intentions) and i also until 2006 at least was not giving any time to it as my focus was SAP and to bring it to greater heights. In 2004, against all odds, i proceeded to set up pre gel starch manufacturing facility and today that decision is vindicated by its giving as much profit per annum as is the cost of the plant. In 2006 we took on rent an intermediate manufacturing facility in Navi Mumbai. In the very second year we started earning profits. The going was good. And in that euphoria, i made my first mistake. I aimed high and set up a very high end Chemistry research lab in 2008. I thought that from the profits of manufacturing (and indeed it was profitable), i would sustain this lab, which i know would have taken at least 3-5 years to start making profits. But my misfortune, the key technical person did some fraud and we suffered huge losses and batch failures. During 2008, we sold of our trading business minus Danisco to Eac and got some money to fund our vadodara facility. This was my second big mistake. Vadodara facility was to be commissioned at 9 crores but went on to have an investment of around 20 crores. This investment and the sell off practically broke my back and depressed me a lot. But i was a fighter
From the dumps and near termination of Danisco agency, i got ourselves back on track by working day and night for at least 1 Year after all sales people had left. i turned around the entire company bringing in huge sales of Lactitol. from there on the graph of SAP continued to rise and we are seeing the benefits of the Team Work, spirit of success and trust and good will of all partners, and employees. In 2009, Gangwal purchased a sick unit in Tarapur and turned it around under the guidance of Mr. K C Jain and made it a drug manufacturing facility with good R&D base. Since i always did what i felt was right, i took over the sacked team from the closed manufacturing facility of SAP, and tried to make the Gangwal factory profitable, but it was not to be. My this venture was also not profitable initially, but with good R&D, K C Sir’s knowledge and a good team, the factory was turned around. (This is the factory which i visited the least - maybe 6 -10 times in its entire history of 4 - 5 years)
As of today where we stand
A growing dynamic distributing activity
A vibrant pregel starch manufacturing facility
A WHO-GMP approved drug manufacturing facility
A potentially profitable vitamin premix business
A politically dependent vadodara unit with a potential to SUARGE AHEAD of all other businesses with just a little political support. Aim for 2016 -17 - turnover of a minimum of 300 cr. I request all team players to share in my past, my present and my vision for the future and help achieve our growth potential which is huge...
