FSSAI Introduces โAyurveda Aaharaโ Category
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has introduced a new licensing category called โAyurveda Aaharaโ, effective 1st September 2025.
This landmark move aims to bring traditional Ayurvedic foods under a clear regulatory framework, ensuring they are safe, authentic, and traceable for consumers.
Examples include:
Dahi/Takra (curd-based drinks like buttermilk) Dali/Soopa (pulse-based soups) Gulkand Indarika (Idli) Kashaya (Herbal tea)
What is Not Included?
The category excludes:
Ayurvedic drugs & proprietary medicines Cosmetics, narcotics, psychotropic substances Herbs under Schedule E-1 of Drugs & Cosmetics Act Metal-based preparations (bhasma, pishti, etc.) Common staples (rice, pulses, flour, vegetables) unless specially processed under Ayurvedic provisions ๐ Compliance for Food Businesses (FBOs)
FBOs must:
Formulate products under Schedule B Follow Schedule 4 of FSS (Licensing & Registration) Regulations, 2011 Avoid products for infants below 24 months Prohibit synthetic vitamins/minerals/amino acids (only naturally present ones allowed)
Ingredient Standards:
Must follow FSSAI regulations, recognized pharmacopoeias (Indian, Ayurvedic, British, US), BIS, or ICMR standards Only authoritative texts published before 1940 are valid (appendices/annexures excluded)
