Cancer care in Dakshina Kannada reached a new milestone as the first patient received chemotherapy at Govt. Wenlock District Hospital under the Hub-and-Spoke model in partnership with KMC Mangalore on 8th September 2025.
In this model, the hub KMC Hospital Attavar Oncology Centre administers the initial chemotherapy cycle, while further cycles are delivered at the spoke Wenlock District Hospital, reducing the need for patients to travel repeatedly and easing the financial and logistical burden on families.
The chemotherapy administration was supervised by the oncology team of KMC Hospital Attavar, with guidance to Wenlock’s medical and nursing staff to ensure treatment safety and continuity.
Dr. B. Unnikrishnan, Dean of KMC Mangalore, said the initiative reflects the institution’s commitment to strengthening public–private partnerships and ensuring that high-quality oncology services reach every section of society.
Dr. DS Shivaprakash, District Medical Officer, Govt. Wenlock Hospital praised the initiative, stating that it would bring advanced cancer treatment closer to the doorstep of economically weaker patients.
Dr. M. S. Athiyamaan, Head of the Department of Oncology at KMC Mangalore, highlighted that this model would ensure standardized cancer care protocols are maintained across both centres, benefitting patients through seamless and safe treatment delivery.
With this development, chemotherapy will now be administered at Wenlock District Hospital itself, helping all patients and significantly cutting down treatment-related costs.
