Burping is an important part of feeding that helps your little one feel comfortable and prevents gas build-up. With a few gentle techniques, you can make it a simple and soothing routine. Whether you hold your baby over your shoulder, lay them tummy-down on your lap, sit them upright for support, or just use a burp cloth to stay mess-free, each method works to release those tiny air bubbles. Focusing on gentle pats and rubs, especially on the left side of the back, makes burping more effective. A calm tummy means a happy, relaxed baby — and a happier you too!

Finding the right breastfeeding position can make a big difference in reducing gas and keeping your baby comfortable. Certain holds can slow milk flow, minimise air intake, and make feeding a calmer experience for both of you.

Football Hold – Hold your baby tucked under your arm like a football, with their body along your side and feet pointing behind you. This keeps them upright and is especially helpful for mums recovering from a C-section.

Laid-Back Position – Recline comfortably and place your baby tummy-down on your chest. Gravity helps them latch, and the relaxed angle can slow milk flow.

Side-Lying – Lie on your side with your baby facing you, tummy to tummy. Perfect for night feeds or recovery after birth.

Cross-Cradle Hold – Hold your baby across your body with the opposite arm supporting their head, giving you more control to help them latch.

Cradle Hold – Rest your baby’s head in the crook of your arm with their body along your forearm and tummy against you. This is a comfortable position once feeding is well-established.

Keeping your baby’s head slightly higher than their tummy during feeds allows milk to flow smoothly and reduces the chances of swallowing excess air. Always burp your baby after feeding and watch for signs of discomfort. Every baby is unique, so try different positions to see which works best for you both.
