वैशाख शुक्ल पक्ष की तृतीया तिथि को अक्षय तृतीया कहा जाता है. इस दिन सूर्य और चन्द्रमा दोनों ही अपनी उच्च राशि में स्थित होते हैं, अतः दोनों की सम्मिलित कृपा का फल अक्षय हो जाता है. अक्षय का अर्थ होता है जिसका क्षय न हो. माना जाता है कि इस तिथि को किए गए कार्यों के परिणाम का क्षय नहीं होता.
