Caused by contaminated water due to poor sanitation and flooding.

CHOLERA: Severe diarrhea, dehydration, vomiting.Typical is rice water stool

TYPHOID: Prolonged fever, weakness, abdominal pain.

HEPATITIS A & E: JAUNDICE, fatigue, nausea.

ACUTE DIARRHEAL DISEASE (ADD): Common in children; leads to dehydration.

TIP: DRINK CLEAN WATER, AVOID STREET FOOD, CLEAN VEGETABLES AND FRUITS THOROUGHLY.

2. VECTOR-BORNE DISEASES
Spread by mosquitoes and other insects breeding in stagnant water.

DENGUE FEVER: High fever, joint pain, skin rash, bleeding in severe cases.

MALARIA: Cyclical fever, chills, sweating, weakness.

CHIKUNGUNYA: Severe joint pain, fever, fatigue.

JAPANESE ENCEPHALITIS (IN ENDEMIC REGIONS): Inflammation of the brain, headache, vomiting.

TIP: USE MOSQUITO NETS, COVER WATER CONTAINERS, COVER BODY PARTS PROPERLY AVOIDING MOSQUITO BITE. KEEP HOUSE AND SURROUNDINGS CLEAN

3. FUNGAL INFECTIONS
Due to constant dampness and poor hygiene.

ATHLETEโ€™S FOOT: Fungal infection between the toes.

RINGWORM Circular skin rashes, itching.

CANDIDIASIS: Common in skin folds; caused by yeast.

TIP: KEEP YOUR BODY DRY AND CLEAN. WEAR BREATHABLE CLOTHES.

4. RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS
Moist air and mold growth can worsen respiratory issues.

COLD AND FLU: Common due to temperature changes.

BRONCHITIS: Inflammation of the airways.

ASTHMA: Monsoon allergens can trigger attacks.

5. LEPTOSPIROSIS
Spread by contact with water contaminated with urine of infected animals (common in flood-prone areas).

SYMPTOMS: High fever, muscle pain, vomiting, sometimes kidney or liver damage.

TIP: AVOID WALKING IN FLOODWATER
IN ANY CASE WASH HANDS REPEATEDLY AND PROPERLY.

CIRCADIAN RHYTHM SERIES -PART 2
Timings of different organ functioning or THE ORGAN CLOCK

MORNING (3 am - 7 am):

LUNGS (3-5 AM):

Peak time for lung function, associated with respiration and the body's immune system. In our Indian tradition this is called AMRITVELA. We can get maximum benefit while meditating at this time.

LARGE INTESTINE( 5 am -7 am):
Peak time for bowel movements, associated with detoxification and elimination of waste. This is the best time for clearing bowels.

MID-MORNING (7 AM - 11 AM):

STOMACH (7-9 AM):Peak time for digestion, making it an ideal time to eat breakfast that I recommend to my patients.

SPLEEN (9-11 AM): Peak time for nutrient absorption and energy production. Best time to take fruits is 11 am. Spleen takes on it emotions related to worry.

AFTERNOON( 11AM - 3PM)

HEART ( 11 am - 1 pm)
Peak time for the heart's circulation of blood, providing energy and nutrition. Blood pressure typically reaches a plateau around this time, and there's a general trend towards increased activity in the cardiovascular system.

SMALL INTESTINE (1-3 pm):
Peak time for the absorption of nutrients from food. Lunch is recommended to be taken at 1 pm to 2 pm. Even if meals are somewhat heavy, can be managed well by the body.

LATE AFTERNOON/EVENING (3 PM - 11 PM):

BLADDER (3-5 PM):

Peak time for urination, associated with fluid balance. Adequate hydration throughout the day helps bladder clearance well during this time.

KIDNEYS (5-7 PM):
Peak time for the kidneys' filtering and waste removal functions. It is a good time for Blood pressure control and kidney health .Fear effects kidneys.

PERICARDIUM (7-9 PM):
Associated with emotions, especially love and happiness.

BLOOD VESSELS (9-11 PM):
Blood flow is usually lower during this time as the body prepares for sleep. If brain is kept active with gadgets or other activities, sleep is distrupted.

NIGHT (11 PM - 3 AM):

GALLBLADDER (11 PM-1 AM): Peak time for bile secretion and fat digestion, as well as associated with decision-making. Sub concious mind works well. So positive affirmations are must before sleep.Late dinners distrupt fat digestion leading to indigestion.

LIVER (1-3 AM): Peak time for detoxification, blood cleansing, and emotional processing. Anger and frustration effects liver.

NOTE:This is just a guidelines in TCM for how different organs work at their best.

CIRCADIAN RHYTHM : UNIVERSE'S GIFT

In our body there are in built natural, internal processes that regulate physical, mental, and behavioral changes over a 24-hour cycle. These rhythms are often referred to as the body's "internal clock" And is called " Circadian rhythm. " These are influenced by light and darkness.
They affect various bodily functions, including sleep, body temperature, hormone release, appetite, and other physiological processes.

HOW DOES CIRCADIAN RHYTHM WORK?

Thr circadian rhythm makes sure that bodyโ€™s processes perform optimally at different points during a 24-hour period.

Circadian rhythm coordinates the physical and mental systems throughout body. For instance, the endocrine system controls hormones like cortisol for energy expenditure, and digestive system creates proteins to match the timing of one's meals.
The circadian rhythm connects to an internal clock in the brain. This internal clock is located in a tiny cluster of cells in the hypothalamus. Throughout the day, internal clock genes in these cells send signals to control the activity throughout the body.

The cluster of cells ( called Suprachiamatic nucleus SCN) are responsible for circadian rhythm.

These are sensitive to light. Light Thatโ€™s why circadian rhythms closely relate to day and night.
How is Circadian rhythm in babies, toddlers and children?

Newborns typically donโ€™t develop a circadian rhythm until theyโ€™re a few months old. So their sleep patterns tend to be erratic in those first few days, weeks and months.
Usually it develops when they are 2 to 9 months. Once it start ,they have regular 10 hours of night sleep pattern.

CIRCADIAN RHYTHM IN TEENAGERS

*NOW WE WILL TALK ABOUT TODAYS BURNING TOPIC OF SLEEP DEPRIVATION IN TEENS.*

During teen years ,children may experience a sleep phase delay, which is a shift in their circadian rhythm. When they were younger, they had early bedtimes (8:00 p.m. or 9:00 p.m.).

But now teens may not get tired until much later . Their melatonin level may not rise until around 10:00 p.m. or 11:00 p.m. And as theyโ€™re going to bed later, they need to sleep later into the morning. Teenagers still need around 9 hours of sleep a night.

CIRCADIAN RHYTHM IN ADULTS

In those adults who practice healthy habits, have a consistent circadian rhythm. If one follows a regular schedule and get seven to 8 hours of sleep at night( Varies individual to individual) bedtime and wake time should remain stable.

CIRCADIAN RHYTHM IN OLD AGE OF 60 YEARS

It may be noticed that in senior citizens, circadian rhythm changes. They may go to bed earlier and wake up earlier, too. This is a typical part of aging.

FACTORS EFFECTING CIRCADIAN RHYTHM

Light and dark have the biggest effect on circadian rhythm apart from others as follow:

1.Food intake.
2.Stress.
3.Physical activity.
4.Temperature.
5.Overnight or off-hour work shifts.
6.Travel.
7.Certain medications.
8.Mental health conditions.
Health conditions involving head or brain.
9.Poor sleep habits

CIRCADIAN RHYTHM DISORDERS

Sometimes, changes in circadian rhythm can be a sign of a more serious health condition like a circadian rhythm disorder. These types of disorders include:

1. DELAYED SLEEP PHASE SYNDROME:
This type of disorder affects people known as โ€œnight owls.โ€ It means they go to bed and wake up two or more hours later than most people.

2. ADVANCED SLEEP PHASE DISORDER :
It is the opposite of delayed sleep phase syndrome. One falls asleep three or more hours before most people and then wake up very early. Itโ€™s largely seen in elderly patients with cognitive impairment/dementia.

3. JET LAG :
It is a condition that occurs when one travels over three or more time zones by airplane. She or he may experience insomnia, extreme tiredness (fatigue) and other symptoms.

4. SHIFT WORK SLEEP DISORDER (SWSD):

In present time many officials do night shift duties mostly IT professionals. SWSD occurs when a work or a job demands untraditional or unpredictable hours. It can cause insomnia, trouble staying asleep and inappropriate sleepiness.

6.IRREGULAR SLEEP-WAKE DISORDER:

In this condition, the body canโ€™t set a regular wake and sleep schedule.

EFFECTS OF DISRUPTED CIRCADIAN RHYTHM:

Regulation of circadian rhythm is very important for health. If one experiences a circadian rhythm disruption and canโ€™t get an adequate amount of sleep, there may develop certain short-term and long-term health issues as follows:

SHORT-TERM CIRCADIAN RHYTHM DISRUPTIONS MAY RESULT IN:

1.A delay in healing wounds.
2.Changes to your hormones.
3.Digestion issues.
4.Fluctuations in your body temperature.
5.Lack of energy.
6.Memory loss.

LONG-TERM CIRCADIAN RHYTHM DISRUPTION MAY EFFECT NORMAL FUNCTIONS OF:

1.Cardiovascular system.
2.Metabolism.
3.Gastrointestinal system.
4.Endocrine system.
5.Nervous system.

Regulation of circadian rhythm is very important for health. If one experiences a circadian rhythm disruption and canโ€™t get an adequate amount of sleep, there may develop certain short-term and long-term health issues as follows:

HOW CAN I FIX MY CIRCADIAN RHYTHM?

To reset the circadian rhythm, body needs to follow a healthy 24-hour schedule. Use the following tips to stay on track:

1. Try to stick to a daily routine.

2. Go outside when itโ€™s light out to boost sense of wakefulness.

3. Get some form of daily physical activity.

4. Foster a restful sleep environment.

5. Make sure sleeping on a supportive mattress in a room with a comfortable temperature and proper lighting.

6. Avoid caffeine, ni****ne and alcohol, especially in the evenings( After 4 pm)

Limit screen time before bedtime, as the blue light can disrupt your ability to fall asleep.

Better option is meditation or reading a book.
7. Avoid a nap in the late afternoons or evenings.( 20 min. power nap in afternoon can be useful)
