Becoming parents brings a lot of joy, but also many questions! In this video, Dr. Jaswinder Saini, Consultant Paediatrician & Neonatologist, explains the essential care every newborn needs in the first few days of life.
π Feeding & Immunity
- After a normal delivery, breastfeeding should start within 30 minutes.
- In case of a C-section, feeding should start within 4 hours (if the mother is stable).
- The first yellow milk β colostrum β is called βliquid goldβ as it provides powerful immunity and protects your baby from infections.
Feed every 2 hours. If motherβs milk is insufficient, formula milk can be given.
π« Do not give cowβs milk, buffaloβs milk, ghutti, or honey.
𧑠Umbilical Cord & Skin Care
- The umbilical cord usually dries and falls off in 7β10 days. Keep it clean and dry, avoid applying anything.
- Newborn skin is very delicate. Apply only coconut oil for at least the first month to prevent rashes and allergies.
π Burping & Digestion
- Always burp the baby after feeding to release excess air from the stomach. This helps prevent vomiting, gas, and stomach pain.
- In the first 24 hours, babies should pass urine and stool. Normally, they pass urine 5β6 times a day.
- Passing stools varies β some babies may go once in 3β4 days, while others go 5β6 times a day. Both are completely normal.
π Other Normal Observations
- Sneezing is very common in newborns as their nostrils are tiny and they clear them naturally.
- Mild cough, hiccups, or stretching are also normal in the early days.
β¨ Final Advice
- The first few days are crucial for your babyβs health. Observe these small but important signs, feed regularly, and give lots of love. If you ever feel confused or notice something unusual, always consult your paediatrician for guidance.
