Navratri 2025 – Day 4: Maa Kushmanda
On the fourth day of Navratri, devotees honor Maa Kushmanda, the radiant creatrix whose divine smile is said to have illuminated the cosmos and given birth to the universe.
Significance of Maa Kushmanda
The name Kushmanda comes from three words — “Ku” (small), “Ushma” (energy), and “Anda” (cosmic egg), representing her supreme power to create the universe out of nothingness.
She rides a lioness and is revered as Ashtabhuja Devi (the Eight-Armed Goddess). In her hands, she carries a lotus, kamandal, bow, arrow, amrit kalash, japa mala, mace, and chakra, each symbolizing divine energy and balance.
Maa Kushmanda governs the Anahata Chakra (Heart Chakra), blessing her devotees with emotional healing, vitality, and unconditional love. Worshipping her is especially recommended for those suffering from depression, anxiety, or inner turmoil, as she brings light, hope, and renewal.
Puja Vidhi (Rituals):
-Wake up early, bathe, and wear clean clothes.
-Light a desi ghee lamp in front of the goddess.
-Offer yellow items such as flowers, bangles, chunni, or sarees (yellow is her auspicious color).
-Present seasonal fruits, meetha paan, supari, laung, and elaichi as offerings.
-Recite Durga Chalisa and Durga Saptashati, chant her mantras, and perform evening aarti.
-Break the fast with sattvik foods (pure, vegetarian, and non-spicy) in the evening.
The Story of Maa Kushmanda
When the universe was enveloped in complete darkness, Goddess Kushmanda’s gentle smile radiated a light so powerful that it created the galaxies, planets, and stars. She became the primordial source of energy and is believed to be the very power behind the Sun itself.
