5 Tips That Promote Heart Health

Preventing Heart Disease
1) Quit Smoking: Because cigarette smoking is so prevalent and destructive, it has been identified by the Surgeon General as the single most preventable cause of disease and premature death in the nation.

2) Watch Your Waistline: The risks to heart health that are associated with obesity include heart attacks, heart failure, CVD, and CHD, along with a whole host of other negative health effects.

3) Keep Moving: As little as a half-hour of exercise daily can protect your heart. Aerobic activities such as walking, running and swimming work the heart and help keep it robust.

4) Watch Your Cholesterol: The toxins in to***co smoke lower a person's high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL or "good" cholesterol) while raising levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL or "bad" cholesterol).

5) Maintain Normal Blood Pressure: While at the doctor’s office getting your cholesterol checked, have your blood pressure checked also. Maintaining a healthy blood pressure reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke and heart failure.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD)

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection — sometimes referred to as SCAD — is an uncommon emergency condition that occurs when a tear forms in a blood vessel in the heart.SCAD can slow or block blood flow to the heart, causing a heart attack, abnormalities in heart rhythm or sudden death.

SCAD most commonly affects women in their 40s and 50s, though it can occur at any age and can occur in men. People who have SCAD often don't have risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes.

SCAD can cause sudden death if it isn't diagnosed and treated promptly. Seek emergency attention if you experience heart attack symptoms — even if you think you aren't at risk of a heart attack.

Symptoms

-Chest pain
-A rapid heartbeat or fluttery feeling in your chest
-Pain in your arms, shoulders or jaw
-Shortness of breath
-Sweating
-Unusual, extreme tiredness
-Nausea
-Dizziness

If you experience chest pain or think you might be having a heart attack, call on your local emergency number.

Hypertensive Heart Disease

Hypertensive heart disease refers to heart conditions caused by high blood pressure. The heart working under increased pressure causes some different heart disorders. Hypertensive heart disease includes heart failure, thickening of the heart muscle, coronary artery disease, and other conditions. Hypertensive heart disease can cause serious health problems. It’s the leading cause of death from high blood pressure.

Complications: Both CHD and LVH can lead to:

1. Heart failure: Your heart is unable to pump enough blood to
the rest of your body
2. Arrhythmia: Your heart beats abnormally
3. Ischemic heart disease: Your heart doesn’t get enough
oxygen
4. Heart attack: Blood flow to the heart is interrupted and the
heart muscle dies from lack of oxygen
5. Sudden cardiac arrest: Your heart suddenly stops working,
you stop breathing, and you lose consciousness stroke and
sudden death

You need emergency care if your heart is suddenly beating rapidly or irregularly.

Bradycardia and It's Symptoms

Bradycardia is a slower than normal heart rate. The hearts of adults at rest usually beat between 60 and 100 times a minute. If you have bradycardia (brad-e-KAHR-dee-uh), your heart beats fewer than 60 times a minute.
Bradycardia can be a serious problem if the heart doesn't pump enough oxygen-rich blood to the body. For some people, however, bradycardia doesn't cause symptoms or complications.

Symptoms
If you have bradycardia, your brain and other organs might not get enough oxygen, possibly causing these symptoms:

-Near-fainting or fainting (syncope)
-Dizziness or lightheadedness
-Fatigue
-Shortness of breath
-Chest pains
-Confusion or memory problems
-Easily tiring during physical activity

A number of conditions can cause signs and symptoms of bradycardia. It's important to get a prompt, accurate diagnosis and appropriate care. See your doctor if you or your child has symptoms of bradycardia.

Rheumatic Heart Disease and It's Symptoms

Rheumatic heart disease is a condition in which the heart valves have been permanently damaged by rheumatic fever. The heart valve damage may start shortly after untreated or under-treated streptococcal infection such as strep throat or scarlet fever.

These are the most common symptoms of rheumatic fever:

-Fever
-Swollen, tender, red and extremely painful joints —
particularly the knees and ankles
-Nodules (lumps under the skin)
-Red, raised, lattice-like rash, usually on the chest, back, and
abdomen
-Shortness of breath and chest discomfort
-Uncontrolled movements of arms, legs, or facial muscles
-Weakness

Symptoms of rheumatic heart disease depend on the degree of valve damage and may include:

-Shortness of breath (especially with activity or when lying
down)
-Chest pain
-Swelling

If your symptoms get worse or you have new symptoms, call your healthcare provider.

Brugada Syndrome and It's Symptoms

Brugada syndrome is a rare but serious condition that affects the way electrical signals pass through the heart. It can cause the heart to beat dangerously fast. Brugada syndrome is usually caused by a faulty gene that's inherited by a child from a parent. A simple heart test can be done to see if you have it.

Symptoms of Brugada Syndrome:
Many people with Brugada syndrome don't have any symptoms and don't realise they have it.

Some people experience:

-Blackouts
-Fits (seizures)
-Occasional noticeable heartbeats (palpitations), chest pain, breathlessness, or dizziness.

If you've already been diagnosed with Brugada syndrome, contact your specialist as soon as possible if you experience any symptoms.

"Arrhythmia" means your heartbeat is irregular. It doesn't necessarily mean your heart is beating too fast or too slow. It may feel like your heart skipped a beat, added a beat, is "fluttering," or is beating too fast (which doctors call tachycardia) or too slow (called bradycardia).

If you have an abnormal heart rhythm, you may experience some or all of these symptoms:

-feeling faint, dizzy, or light-headed
-shortness of breath
-irregular pulse or heart palpitations
-chest pain
-pale skin
-sweating

“If you have symptoms of lightheadedness, chest pain, or shortness of breath along with an irregular heart rhythm, then seek help immediately.

Pulmonary Hypertension and It's Symptoms

Pulmonary hypertension is a condition of increased blood pressure within the arteries of the lungs. The arteries are narrowed which makes it more difficult for blood to flow through. Pulmonary hypertension puts a lot of strain on the right side of the heart causing symptoms such as irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, dizziness, or heart failure. Pulmonary hypertension is treated with medications and lifestyle changes and, in some cases, surgery.

Symptoms of pulmonary hypertension can include:

-Shortness of breath during exertion such as walking up a flight of stairs or during normal activity
-Tiredness
-Dizziness or fainting
-Chest pain
-Swelling in the ankles, legs, or abdomen
-Fast heartbeat
-A blue tint to the lips or skin
