A Silent Reminder
Recently, I visited a hospital to meet a friend who had been admitted there. My friend was on the 8th floor, so I stepped into the lift. Two other men entered with me. As the elevator ascended, I found myself listening to their quiet conversation.
They were discussing a family member who had also been admitted to the same hospital. “He’s doing well now,” one of them said, “but the doctors have advised complete silence for the next few days. He’s not allowed to speak to anyone yet.”
By the time we reached the 8th floor, their words had left a deep impression on me. I stepped out of the lift, but my mind kept circling back to what I had just heard.
It made me think, how often do we give ourselves time to be silent? To pause? To truly listen to what’s going on inside us? In today’s fast-paced world, we rarely take even ten minutes to sit with ourselves. We're constantly distracted and constantly on the move.
That’s where meditation comes in, not just in the traditional sense, but in any form that helps us connect with our inner world. It could be sitting quietly, walking mindfully, breathing deeply, or simply being still.
The thought that stayed with me the most was this: that man in the hospital was now being forced into silence, after reaching a point of serious illness. Perhaps when he had the time earlier, he didn’t value it. And now, silence has become a part of his healing.
That moment was a reflection, a gentle reminder, don’t wait for life to force you into stillness. Instead, give yourself the gift of silence, even in small doses. It’s not a luxury anymore; it’s a necessity for our well-being in today’s busy world.
Warm regards,
Ram Soni
