BMI - Body Mass Index.
Body mass index (BMI) is a calculation that estimates a person’s body fat using their height and weight. A BMI of 18.5–24.9 is considered “normal” weight with a low risk of poor health, while anything above or below may indicate a higher risk of poor health.

Though BMI has been criticized for its oversimplification of health, most research supports its ability to estimate a person’s risk of chronic disease, particularly one’s risk of early death and metabolic syndrome.

- it doesn't consider other factors
- assumes all weight as equal
- doesn't consider fat distribution
- may lead to weight bias
- may not be relevant for all population

So chose your definition of health wisely!

It's a trend to have exotic foods & vegetables. But everyone forget that there are better & cheap alternatives available locally. For example - instead of having quinoa one can have rajgeera, millets etc which is grown in India & available locally.

You don't have to spend large sums of money to get healthy!

Options! Options! Options!
Grains are the staple of our diet & great source of complex carbohydrates. Since past few decades wheat & rice has been are staple, which are great too but too much consumption of particular grains can make you lack other nutrients which are available in different grains.

From my view point all whole grains are superstars, many are pack unique characteristics and health benefits not found in other grains.
It is always suggested that you keep variety in your diet and have fun.

Never make a sudden change always take small steps while building a healthy habit/lifestyle. One step at a time can help you long term.

As always, Good luck ❤️

Your immune system consists of a complex collection of cells, processes and chemicals that constantly defends your body against invading pathogens.
Keeping your immune system healthy year-round is key to preventing infection and diseases. Consumption of nutritious foods, sleep and exercise are the most important ways to boosts your immune system.
In addition, research has shown that supplementing certain vitamins, minerals, herbs and other substances can improve immune response and can potentially protect against illness.

1. Vitamin D: The number one vitamin that comes to every healthcare provider's mind is VITAMIN D. Many people are deficient in this important vitamin, which may have negative effects on immune function. There are studies that shows a link between respiratory infections and low vitamin D

2. Zinc: It is the most commonly seen vitamin in supplements since it is essential for immune system function. The deficiency reduces the ability of immune system to function and can increase risk of certain infections and disease which includes pneumonia.

3. Vitamin C: Everyone's favourite and the most common of all. It is not only a powerful antioxidant but also protects against any damage from oxidative stress which can affect immune health.

PS: Some supplements can interact with prescription or other medications. Be sure to talk with your healthcare provider before starting any supplements.

Since I have been talking about nutritional supplements, here is a quick thought about it.

Your body doesn’t have the enzymes to produce omega 3 and 6 so you must get them from your diet.

If you don’t get any from your diet, you develop a deficiency and can fall ill. That is why they are termed “essential” fatty acids.

However, these fatty acids are different than most other fats. They are not simply used for energy or stored, they are biologically active and have important roles in processes like blood clotting and inflammation.

But omega-6s and omega-3s don’t have the same effects. Scientists believe omega-6s are pro-inflammatory, while omega-3s are anti-inflammatory.

Scientists have hypothesized that a diet high in omega-6s but low in omega-3s increases inflammation, while a diet that includes balanced amounts of each reduces inflammation

Currently, the consumption of vegetable oils high in omega-6 has increased dramatically in the past 100 years which can have serious ill effects on our health. And the consumption of omega-3 has drastically fallen since post World War II.

Tip: You can start slowly by incorporating omega-3 rich foods in your diet and then introduce a supplement.

I will make a post about omega-3 rich foods, so look out for that in future

Gluten! Gluten! Gluten!
We all have heard this too many times, but do we know what Gluten is?
It’s high time that everyone is aware of this word that we consume in our everyday Indian diet. So here it goes!

🍞What is Gluten?
It is a protein which is commonly found in wheat, rye, barley and some amounts in oats.
Gluten gives these grains certain type of elasticity/ability to hold everything together

🍞When should one avoid it?
Gluten intolerance has different levels of discomfort and problems. If you are on the extremity of intolerance it can lead to a disease called a celiac disease by having an immune reaction. This causes inflammation and damage to the intestinal tracts and other parts of the body after ingestion of gluten.
If there are symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, gas formation or nausea observe your body and make a note of it or if the discomfort exceeds take help from a healthcare professional

If you do not have any of the above symptoms you are A-okay to consume it until you have chosen not to consume it for other health reasons.

🍞How can one replace it? if needed
There are plenty of options in our Indian diet such as jowar, bajra, ragi and if you are feeling fancy you can opt for almond flour, oats, brown rice flour as well for consuming it as roti, bread, paratha etc

🍞Is there a cure?
No! But staying on a gluten-free diet will stop the symptoms and further damage to the body.

We all acknowledge the impotance of a healthy lifestyle. It not only depends on your workout routine but also on the kind of food you eat. Eating the right food not only helps you stay lean but boosts your immune system which is your body’s defence against infections.

Your immune system consists of organs, cells, tissues, and proteins. Together, these carry out functions that fight off pathogens, which are the viruses, bacteria, and foreign bodies that cause infection or disease. The stronger your immune system, the healthier you will be. This is why eating the right food to increase immunity is essential for your health.

While there are plenty of immune boosting foods, you should also be aware of some of them

Try and incorporate these foods in your daily diet
