Figs are cultivated in about 2,500 hectares of land in Maharashtra from Purandar alone which is known as Anjir Aagat.
The unique size, shape, skin color, and pulpiness of Purandar Figs are attributed to the agro-climatic factors.
An interesting point to note about The Purandar Figs is that their fruiting period happens twice a year. A blossom takes place in the months of July and August (during the rainy season). The fruit of the figs which ripen in this season are moderately sweet to taste, not very attractive to look at but are in great demand as other fruits are not available in the Kharif season.
The fig is a highly nutritious fruit. Its fiber, potassium, and antioxidant content helps control blood pressure, aids in digestion, helps to maintain weight, prevents constipation, etc. to mention a few.
With so many health attributes, it is one of the most sought for fruits in the state of Maharashtra.
