The Empty Chair Counselling Centre Turns 5

Five years ago, in the middle of a lockdown, The Empty Chair Counselling Centre began as a quiet idea during a phone call with my mentor, .
I was at a crossroads, trying to figure out my next step, when I shared a dream of building a space rooted in empathy, ethics, and inclusive healing.

Divya gently held that vision with me. She helped name the organisation, built the first version of our website, and — most importantly — believed in me before I believed in myself.

That conversation became a decision. That decision became TEC, and today we celebrate five deeply meaningful years.

✨ In this time, TEC has:

~Supported hundreds of individuals and couples across the globe

~Conducted multiple workshops and webinars

~Collaborated with organisations, schools, and professionals

~Trained and mentored new therapists and interns

~Built a strong reputation for sustainable, inclusive, trauma-informed care

As TEC grew, so did I — from a solo practitioner to a founder and facilitator. The journey has been full of learning, unlearning, showing up, and growing into roles I once only dreamed of.

To Divya — thank you for planting this seed with me. Your support is woven into everything TEC stands for.
And to every client, collaborator, and colleague — you are the reason this chair has never been empty. ❤️

Here’s to what’s next — one session, one story, one person at a time.

🧠 Embracing Weekend Therapy: A Commitment to My Clients' Well-being

I often get asked, "Why do you work on weekends?
When do you take a break?"

The truth is, my weekends are my busiest days. While many unwind, I find purpose in being present for my clients—most of whom are working professionals with tight weekday schedules. Weekend sessions offer them a chance to engage in therapy without the stress of daily work commitments, leading to more productive and focused sessions .

To maintain balance, I take Mondays off. This rhythm ensures I'm recharged and fully present during sessions. Offering weekend therapy not only meets my clients' needs but also differentiates my practice in a field where such flexibility is rare .

💬 Final Thought:
Being a therapist isn't just a profession; it's a commitment. By aligning my schedule with my clients' needs, I strive to be the support they seek, whenever they need it.

"I can tell this to you because I know you won’t judge me."
A client shared this with me today.

It landed softly, like truth often does.

In that moment, I was reminded of how deeply we, as humans, long for spaces where we can be fully seen — without fear, without masks, without judgment.

Therapy can be one of those rare spaces. A space where silence is allowed, messiness is welcome, and stories can be told without being weighed down by shame.

Not everyone gets to feel that kind of safety in their everyday relationships. And that's not a fault — it's just that the world doesn’t always make space for vulnerability.

But when someone feels safe enough to say "I've never told anyone this before" — it’s not just about therapy. It’s about the profound human need to be accepted, held, and understood.

If you’ve ever felt that, or longed for that, you’re not alone.
We all carry stories we wish someone could simply hold without flinching.

That’s the kind of space I hope to keep offering — one where your truth doesn’t have to be dressed up to be received.

As a therapist, my Sundays are usually full—sessions back to back, holding space for those who finally find time to pause and reflect.

But this Sunday, I woke up unwell.
Physically drained, mentally foggy. I couldn’t take sessions and had to cancel everything… at the very last minute.

And with that decision came a wave of guilt.
Heavy. Loud. Persistent.

The kind that whispers:
“You should’ve pushed through.”
“They were counting on you.”
“You’ve let them down.”

I rarely cancel on clients. Consistency and showing up matter deeply to me. But the guilt that followed wasn't just about cancelling—it was about not being able to do what I usually do with ease.

It questioned my commitment, my worth, my boundaries.
It made rest feel undeserved.

But here’s what I keep reminding myself—
I am a therapist, yes. But I am also a human being. One with limits, needs, and a body that sometimes says, pause.

And just like I tell my clients:
Your worth isn’t measured by how much you can push through.
Rest is not a failure. Guilt is not a fact.

To every caregiver, therapist, and healer reading this—
You’re allowed to take a step back.
Even when it feels inconvenient.
Even when guilt shows up.
Especially then.

Let’s continue to practice compassion—not just with others, but with ourselves too.

The Journey to Being “Good Enough”

In my early years as a therapist, I carried the quiet belief that I had to be the best — that I needed to show up perfectly for every client, with all the right answers, all the time.

But the more I worked, the more I felt the weight of that expectation. It left little room for my own humanness, for imperfection, or for simply being present.
I often found myself feeling like an imposter — as though I was constantly falling short of an invisible standard.

It was today that I revisited Donald Winnicott’s concept of the “good enough mother” — a caregiver who doesn’t strive for perfection, but instead provides a consistent, attuned presence that allows the child to experience and regulate distress, build resilience, and develop secure attachment.

And it clicked.

If a child doesn’t need a perfect mother to grow and thrive…
Then a client doesn’t need a perfect therapist to heal.
They need a present, attuned, and authentic one.
A therapist who shows up enough — with empathy, with care, and with openness.

That shift — from striving to be the best to settling into being good enough — has been deeply liberating.
It’s allowed me to slow down, trust the process, and let go of the need to always "fix" or "prove."

I’m deeply grateful to my fellow therapists- , and — who remind me of this truth often. Their presence grounds me, reflects back my growth, and reminds me that who I am as I am is enough.

Being a good enough therapist isn’t about lowering the bar.
It’s about raising the quality of presence.
It’s about secure attachment — not perfection.
And that is more than enough.

Therapy is a Two-Way Street

One of the things I love most about being a therapist is that the learning never stops. Every session is an opportunity for growth—not just for my clients, but for me as well.

Recently, a conversation with a client deeply shifted my perspective on trauma. As they shared their experiences, I found myself reflecting on nuances I hadn’t fully explored before. Their words stayed with me long after the session, prompting me to revisit my understanding of trauma—how it manifests, how it lingers in the body, and how healing looks different for everyone.

I took time to sit with this realization, engage in research, and discuss it with my colleagues. That’s when I knew it was time to finally start this book—alongside the Navigating Trauma course I’m taking with my mentor,

Honoring the therapeutic process means continuously evolving, learning, and showing up with greater awareness. My clients entrust me with their stories, and I see it as my responsibility to create a space that is informed, compassionate, and ever-growing.

Here’s to embracing lifelong learning and deepening our understanding, one conversation at a time.

The Empty Chair is expanding its wings, and Bangalore is the perfect place for it!

Expanding into this vibrant city feels like a natural step forward. I recently visited Bangalore and had a wonderful opportunity to meet mental health professionals' which was nothing short of amazing. We engaged in an arts-based activity—fluid art—that was not just creatively fulfilling but also deeply therapeutic.

Meeting fellow therapists, sharing perspectives, and immersing ourselves in creativity reminded me why I love this field. The openness, warmth, and curiosity in the Bangalore mental health community are inspiring. This city truly feels like a place of endless opportunities, and I’m excited for what’s to come.

Here’s to new beginnings, meaningful conversations, and building a strong support system for mental health professionals and the people we serve!

Meeting my fellow therapists in person was a refreshing and enriching experience! ✨

In a profession where we hold space for others, it’s truly special to have a space for ourselves—where we can share, learn, and grow together. The conversations, insights, and the sheer joy of being in a room full of like-minded professionals reminded me why community is so important in our work.

Grateful for the connections, the wisdom, and the warmth that filled the room. Here’s to supporting each other and making mental health care a stronger, more inclusive space!

Feeling stuck in your work-from-home routine?

Try switching up your workspace!

🌿 Whether it’s moving to a different room, working by a window, or even stepping outside, changing your environment can boost creativity, focus, and overall well-being. A fresh setting helps reset your mind, reduces mental fatigue, and creates healthier boundaries between work and relaxation.

Recently I switched up my workplace and it helped me complete a lot of my pending tasks.

Even as a therapist, at times I have a lot of backend and admin work which can get overwhelming and sometimes boring 🙄🙄 too. This change in place and environment helped me get some fresh perspective.

Have you tried switching up your workplace?
