Welcome to our Home ❤️

I came across one of the early drawings that I made of my clinic to design how everything will have to be placed, and since there are 3 doors to the clinic, we were very confused as to which one to choose as an entrance.

This was because none of the entrances were wide enough to permit wheelchairs to come in smoothly.

So we decided to put in an additional amount of money, break a few bricks around this door and make it wide enough to allow wheelchairs inside.

The next challenge came for a ramp. If you go to design a ramp, then the ideal ratio is 2:12. Which means for every 2 inch height, the length of the ramp should be 12 inches. Our height was 10 inches. So that meant curating a 5 feet long ramp. Our clinic owner gave us a big no on that 😅.

This is where the non-inclusivity for specially abled folks comes from. Majority of the hospitals, clinics in our city don't even have a ramp for them to come in easily.

So we decided to get it made in wood and design it in a way that we can easily pick it up and keep it whenever not required. It also isnt 5 feet long and the wheelchair user has to be pushed up the slope with a helper at the back. But atleast they can come in easily and it's not a challenge.
This was the only option I had at that time due to the fact that majority of the clinic spaces we saw for 1 year never had wheelchair friendly entrances. So we had to make do with this creation.

A lesson to take away from this: if you are a physio, and you are setting up your own clinic, please make sure it has a wheelchair accessible entrance, so that you can have an inclusive environment for them. After all, to enable them to become independent, as we play a major role, we cannot be the ones creating a big challenge for them to come to our space. 😇

We all know that autonomic dysreflexia is a medical emergency.

However, do you know-
❓All the possible triggers for the same?
❓What should be done in such a situation?
❓What SHOULD NOT BE done in this case?
❓What are the disastrous effects of an episode getting out of control?

Time is of essence, and your thorough knowledge as a physiotherapist interacting with a person with a spinal cord injury can potentially save a precious life.

To become a more informed and proactive professional, join our workshop series ‘Mastering Spinal Cord Injury’ in the month of September 2023. DM for more details!

Clinical reasoning?
Activity limitation?
Participation restriction?

Puzzled by all these columns when it comes to solving ICF?

And- learning about ICF in different formats and now thoroughly confused about what's right and what's not.

So let's make ICF easy to understand and implement in our practice because let's face it, inevitably we do end up doing clinical reasoning and problem solving by using the ICF framework.

How ASIA scale is reported:
1. Sensory level
2. Motor level
3. Neurological level of injury
4. Complete or Incomplete
5. AIS classification
6. Zone of partial preservation

Why is it so important to take ASIA?

- A quantifiable method to track the progress of our SCI patient
- Influences the outcome of our interventions tremendously
- Gives us an idea about the potential prognosis of the patient
- Makes it easy to communicate with other professionals and report our findings.

We will be making it easy for you to understand assessment in SCIs and grade them by ASIA scale. Join our Workshop series on Spinal cord injury happening in September. DM us to enquire further! 😇

Embracing Pregnancy🤰with a Spinal Cord Injury

Pregnancy and parenthood is a powerful incredible journey filled with change, anticipation and a whirlwind of emotions.

This, coupled with a spinal cord injury, can bring out a potentially additional set of considerations that a person would need to take into account.

As physiotherapists, we need to be equipped with knowledge about what these expected (and not-so-expected) changes may be. To learn more about this and beyond, join our workshop series ‘Mastering Spinal Cord Injury’ in the month of September 2023. DM for more details!

After working with a few patients of spinal cord injuries, we discovered that's it's more stressful for them to deal with their pains which happen due to musculoskeletal causes than the actual disability itself.
Some of them go through chronic pain

Lots of factors taken into consideration:
1. Overuse injuries
2. Spasticity
3. Bladder and bowel involvement
4. Muscle and tendon injuries during transfer activities

ISCIP classification gives us the various causes for pain in SCIs.
Out of all, neuropathic pain is the most prevalent and since the pain pathways are disrupted it can cause pain even in the areas where there is little to no sensation.

Questions:
1. What are the management strategies which we can use?
2. Can bladder dysregulation cause pain too?
