Play is the royal road to childhood happiness and adult brilliance.”
~ Joseph Chilton Pearce

If you observe a child at play, you can see a wonderful world unwind in front of you. Block by block when a child builds a castle and then pretends to be its King or Queen or when an elder sibling bosses around the younger one pretending to a teacher, they are not just enjoying, they are learning to develop imagination, create scenarios observed in adults, regulate their emotions, develop resilience and perseverance.
A child will learn almost all the life skills while playing and the added benefit is that it’s fun!! What better way to get ready for life!
Play is the most important part of child’s development. While at play there is physical, social, cognitive and emotional development. The brain learns in many ways while at play. It learns to explore new environments. Understand what’s safe and what’s hazardous, building a child’s confidence to handle situations, develop cognitive skills, math skills, solve problems, resolve conflicts without unnecessary fear or aggression.

A child life goes through different stages of play. It starts developing from meaningless solitary or self play in infancy to associative or cooperative play in childhood.
The simple game of peek a boo in infancy teaches them object permanence that is the thing is present in the world even when out of sight.

They learn social interaction, to share not only toys but also their space with others like adults and kids. The idea that two or more people can be focused on one activity (joint attention) develops. Pretend play as already mentioned helps them enact adult life situations and develop imagination to create their own private world to explore.

In Autism, these skills are a difficult to develop spontaneously because of lack of social interactive skills development and dominance of repetitive behaviours. Due to which, exploring the environment, responding to others, sharing objects and space with others, turn taking, understanding facial expressions etc. are often not observed and have to be taught and developed.
Hence, as a part of holistic intervention for ASD it is necessary to teach the child different play skills (as per age) so that it allows them to understand the importance of interacting with another person, sharing their space , waiting for their turn, following simple rules, association, develop imagination and pretend to stop repetitive, meaningless play.
As much as it’s necessary for the child to learn activities of daily living and academics, play is vital for their progress. Unless given an opportunity to explore unstructured and structured play (step wise) the skills learnt will always be rote and not effective to make the child ready for the world awaiting him outside his comfort zone. So play, play, play and don’t make Jack a dull child.

Its a Disorder, Not a Decision!

When we talk of health related issues, disorders are not a good thing to have. Very evidently not so in this society. It's better you have a disease instead. Sadly our world is programmed to interpret and analyse a disease with full sympathy and understanding, but not so for disorders. We scrutinize, judge, blame and exclude people who for no fault of their own have to deal with these disorders. It is so easy to understand that there is something wrong with the body and it is so uneasy to accept the same for the brain or the mind to be more precise.
This world is seriously a funny place to live in. Everyone is ready to believe in a God or a ghost, they have never seen or known, but they cannot do the same for medical issues. They believe in God in the name of faith. Someone who has not encountered any great miracle other than passing an exam without studying also believes and thanks God for it. On the other hand in the name of science and medicine if someone tells them that they are dealing with the issues like phobia, anxiety and depression they immediately give a reply "Oh! It's not real, you don't look like that." "Get over it." " You are fine, stop thinking too much". "It's just in your head". Oh yes! Well where else is it supposed to be. Thanks for the concern!!
But just because you cannot see it don't deny it. You don't do it with God, so spare the human too. The person dealing with the issue does not want you to sympathise, atleast not always. Just to simplify, when someone tells you that he has broken his leg. What do you tell him? Get over it? Keep running, it will be ok! Obviously not, because we are apparently not dumb. We understand and are good, considerate, intelligent people. On the contrary, when someone says that they are feeling blue and not able to function well, the whole world starts opining and advising, as if it's a choice for the poor fellow. It never is. The person dealing here doesn't want a solution. Not from the half-baked knowledge sponsored, free advisors. What is needed is, someone to just understand and show the decency of not denying outrightly, what one has to say. This non acceptance is specially the case with people who don't have an environmental or social cause for their conditions. It just happened to them because they were wired that way and born predisposed to the disorder. It didn't happen because the world did something to them or they had an unhappy, tortured childhood or violent parents or spouse etc etc...no, nothing like that! It is true that most of the people dealing with these issues have a predisposing environmental factor or history of a traumatizing situation that led them to this state. But that's not everyone's truth. The condition of this lot may be slightly better in this society because they atleast have something to blame. But there is a minority who doesn't have an evident predisposing social factor. They were not tortured as children, they didn't grow up in broken homes, there was nothing wrong for them except for the fact that they were born this way and life gradually led them to develop these concerns. It's already a tough job dealing with a wierd mind and the world makes it all the more difficult by frivolous judgements.
The structure and function of these brains, the wiring and lubricants of these circuits, the neurotransmitters are to be blamed for it. Not anyone else. The world mixes up words and thinks that it is very accommodating.
It needs to be time and again, clarified for this superbly intelligent civilization, that, phobia is not just fear, anxiety is not stress, depression is not sadness or unhappiness, OCD is not perfectionism. For God's sake. They are actual clinical disorders. Stop using these words as synonyms. You don't use tuberculosis or lung cancer for cough... right, so don't use depression for somebody grieving the death of a beloved. It's grief, not depression (unless clinically proved).
Leave it, if you don't understand it. Don't try to belittle what the person is going through. What goes through in one mind in a disorder can be completely different from the other person having the same diagnosis. Some things are much deeper and way beyond what your eyes can see or you can interpret. The reasons are varied. The features are different for everyone. Identify the difference, if understanding is above your capacity. That is all what one wants. That will be the biggest favour to humanity. Stop generalizing and overlooking the facts that are not visible to your naive eyes. Learn to think and accept, to make the situation better for everyone.
