Happy Birthday Fr Torriani!

On this special day, we celebrate our beloved founder, born on 04.09.1935. He came to India in 1965, completed his MSW from TISS, and dedicated his life to serving leprosy patients by establishing Lok Seva Sangam in 1975. Having accepted Indian citizenship, he worked selflessly until 2019, when he returned to Italy for major surgery.

Wishing him good health and continued blessings. May his legacy of compassion continue to inspire us all.

Since 5th August, Lok Seva Sangam has been conducting a series of health check-ups across our education centres Baiganwadi, Janta Nagar, Cheeta camp and Sathe Nagar for pre-primary and tutorial students aged 3 to 14 years.

These free medical camps screen teeth, eyes, skin, and overall health, helping detect early signs of diseases and ensuring timely treatment. For children living in slum communities, where families often cannot afford regular medical care, such initiatives are a lifeline to a healthier future.

In total, 403 students have benefitted from this noble effort, reinforcing our commitment to ensuring that every child has the chance to grow up healthy, strong, and ready to learn.

Volunteer Highlight: Julian Nadal

Joined us for 18 days in July through as part of our Youth Leadership Programme. Returning to LSS after 2 years, he carried the memories of his first journey and built even deeper connections this time.

Julián shares, “We learned more from the LSS children than we could ever teach them. We all have a purpose and are destined for great things and when we give ourselves to others, we not only achieve them but also transform the world around us”.

On 11th August 2025, the Baiganwadi Education Centre was filled with the aroma of freshly cooked food and the joyful laughter of children, thanks to the generous support of the NamMyoho Daan Foundation, who sponsored a live food counter.

The students, staff, volunteers and parents of our Pre-primary, Tutorial, and Capoeira projects and the Youth Leadership Programme all came together to share this special meal. A total of 190 meals were served. Moments like these remind us that nourishment goes beyond food, it is also about care, kindness, and community. For many of our students and their families, such experiences create lasting memories and make them feel truly valued and loved.

A heartfelt thank you to the Foundation for making this day possible and for sharing their compassion in such a meaningful way.

Lok Seva Sangam is actively conducting a leprosy case detection campaign across BMC schools in Mumbai. Early diagnosis is crucial to prevent the disabilities caused by leprosy. We screen every student present for signs of leprosy and raise awareness among students and their communities. 203 BMC schools are present within our operational areas

📆 In 2024–25, 7 child leprosy cases were detected from the schools surveyed — with 45% of schools covered.
📆 In 2025–26, 50 school screenings have been completed so far, and 5 new child leprosy cases have already been identified — with the campaign still ongoing.

A step towards a leprosy-free future.
