Theraphil

Theraphil Theraphil is a pursuit of promoting physical & mental well-being through occupational therapy and evidence-based interventions. Permission to ask for help.

We help people of all ages to achieve freedom from physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities and reach their true potential. “It all starts with giving yourself permission. Permission to not know all the answers. Permission to show up. Permission to make mistakes. Permission to shine.”

As an occupational therapist, I believe that meaningful activity not only promotes health, but helps us get t

hrough the vulnerability of health challenges. My hope for you is to have resilience and maintain your identity and sense of worthiness through life transitions and difficult times. It is always a privilege and an honour to walk beside someone for a short while on their path, to witness them take their story back in their hands and know that their health condition doesn’t dictate their identity. When you are struggling with well-being and doing the things that are important to you, I can help you develop practical coping strategies that fit your unique life. My goal is for you to be able to easily apply the strategy that works best for you in any given situation so you can get unstuck and start doing more of what sustains you and lights you up!

Here are some examples of the different ways occupational therapy can help you:

Going to work : Having persistent negative thoughts can undermine your confidence at work. An occupational therapist can review your work role, responsibilities and environment to identify how you can achieve the most at work. They will break down your work tasks and demonstrate ways your skills and knowledge can be applied so you gain a sense of achievements.

Socialising with family and friends : Withdrawing socially means you are not communicating with friends and family who care and want to help you. An occupational therapist can help you regain your social skills so you can spend quality time with friends and family. An occupational therapist will teach simple coping strategies and work with you to improve your confidence and interaction skills so you can feel comfortable with other people.

Managing daily routines : Daily tasks such as getting out of bed and personal care can be overwhelming. An occupational therapist will demonstrate techniques such as breaking down tasks into manageable steps, goal setting and problem solving, so you are able to do small tasks such as getting out of bed and taking care of yourself.

Finding support and networks: Feeling isolated and alone can amplify depression. An occupational therapist will help you overcome your sense of isolation by connecting you to community based networks and groups. They will suggest you attend meetings and events that will give you a sense of purpose and support in your local area.

1. Be aware of cognitive difficulties : People experiencing psychosis often have cognitive symptoms that make it difficult for them to concentrate, remember details, and follow complex sequences. It's important to understand that these are usually symptoms and not behaviors.

2. Sequences for functional day to day independence. Remove home work: These cognitive symptoms can make doing daily activities like chores very overwhelming. Simplify tasks into one-at-a-time steps. Example: turn "clean your room" into "put the clothes on your bed into a basket."

3. Modify the environment to reduce sensory overload : Create a quiet space in the home where the you can go to recover. Get light-cancelling curtains and noise- cancelling earplugs.

4. Be aware of sensory sensitivities : People experiencing psychosis are often sensitive to sensory inputs like light, sounds, and tactile sensations. Activities like being in a crowd or taking a shower can be overwhelming and even painful.

5. Use lists and reminders : Stickie notes, charts, calendars, lists, and pictures can go a long way in accommodating memory issues.

Adults face multiphase changes from early adulthood to late adulthood that involve a range of factors from establishing personal and economic independence, achievement, recognition, satisfaction, security, achieving adult social and civic responsibility, adjusting to and possibly caring for ageing parents, balancing work and relationships to adjustment to retirement, and decreasing strength and health. How people deal with or respond to these aspects of life impacts on various domains of their lives, such as work and relationships, as well as mental health and wellbeing.

These factors might be a potential cause for various psychological difficulties and mental health problems. Mental health problems are a diverse group of conditions like depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, substance use disorders, etc. that primarily affect cognition, emotion, and behavioural control.
