When minds feel busy and bodies feel restless, calming exercises can help everything slow down.

These simple activities support children in building body awareness, focus, and calm.

Exercise 1: Animal Movements
Have your child move like different animals such as a kangaroo, snake, or penguin. Jump, stretch, or waddle, then pause and notice how their body feels. Each animal feels different because each movement uses different muscles, balance, and energy—some feel bouncy, some slow and stretchy, and some steady and controlled.

Exercise 2: Palm Tracing
Gently trace your child’s palm with your finger and ask them to notice what they feel. This helps them slow down, focus on touch, and feel more grounded.

Exercise 3: Warm Hands
Have your child rub their hands together quickly for a minute, then stop and notice how their hands feel—warm, tingly, or relaxed.

Exercise 4: The Five Senses (5-4-3-2-1)
Help your child name:
5 things they can see,
4 things they can touch,
3 things they can hear,
2 things they can smell,
1 thing they can taste.

Shift from correction to connection.

1. Create ‘Low-Pressure Zones’
“Have spaces at home where there are no demands — no homework, no instructions, no correcting.
Even 15 minutes a day helps their nervous system reset.”

2. Follow Their Interests Like a Guide
“If they love dinosaurs, drawing, trains, coding — use that interest to connect.
Connection builds cooperation without pressure.”

3.Give Choices, Not Commands
“Try swapping:
❌ ‘Put this away now.’
✔️ ‘Do you want to put the blocks in the basket or on the shelf?’
Choices give kids control—pressure drops instantly.”

4.Use Predictable Routines
“Neurodiverse kids thrive on structure because it lowers anxiety.
Make routines visual—charts, sticky notes, or drawings.
Predictability = calm.”

5.Regulate Together
“When your child is overwhelmed, skip the lectures.
Co-regulate:
Slow breathing together… hold their hand… sit near them quietly.

6.Ask This Magic Question
“What would help you right now?’ Or “is this helping you feel better?”
It gives them a voice and reduces pressure immediately.”

7.Build Rest Into the Day
“Neurodiverse kids use more energy to navigate the world.
Mini breaks aren’t laziness—they’re maintenance.”
