You can have a phobia of anything, but there are more than 400 phobias known outside! Phobias such as a fear of heights (acrophobia), fear of flying (aviophobia), fear of snakes (ophidiophobia), fear of dogs (cynophobia), fear of needles (trypanophobia) and the fear of germs (mysophobia) are all pretty common.
2. ꜱᴏᴍᴇ ᴘʜᴏʙɪᴀꜱ ᴍᴀʏ ꜱᴏᴜɴᴅ ꜱᴛʀᴀɴɢᴇ:
There are also rarer and seemingly bizarre phobias, such as the fear of beautiful women (caligynephobia), the fear of cheese (turophobia).
"hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia" is a phobia of long words – probably this 15-syllable word was coined by someone not very nice!
3. ᴀ ꜰᴇᴀʀ ᴀɴᴅ ᴀ ᴘʜᴏʙɪᴀ ᴀʀᴇ ɴᴏᴛ ᴛʜᴇ ꜱᴀᴍᴇ ᴛʜɪɴɢ:
You would probably feel a bit frightened and panicked if you saw a big hairy spider climb your wall. But that doesn't necessarily mean you're phobic about spiders.
Although it is not very pleasant, fear and some level of anxiety are "normal" emotional responses to a real or perceived threat.
A specific phobia, however, is an overwhelming fear of objects and situations.
For example, if a person has a phobia of spiders, they could do everything they can to avoid spiders and they can even begin to consume their lives.
They may spend a great deal of time thinking and worrying about spiders and avoiding the places and activities where spiders might be.
There are ways in which specific phobias can be dealt with. In order to find the right treatment for you or someone you know, remember that phobias are often well treated. If you (or someone you know) could have a phobia, it’s a good idea to seek advice from a medical professional.
