After being discharged post-Total Knee Replacement (TKR), the subsequent days at home are vital for recovery. Before getting discharge from hospital you have to do certain home work- arrange for a Walker, arrange for house help, check the height of commode in ur house( if less than 18” then arrange attachment to increase the height, figure out physiotherapist who can do home visits. Here's what to anticipate during days 6 to 15:
1. Medications: will include pain medications, antibiotics, blood thinners and multivitamin. You have to continue taking medicines for your pre-existing disease and you to keep monitoring your sugar levels and blood pressure (in case you have these). Maintain your hydration and keep a watch on bladder (excess or burning urination indicates urine infection) and bowel( one can expect constipation)
2. Physical Therapy: Home-based exercises guided by your therapist will be essential. They'll focus on knee strength and flexibility.
4. Swelling Control: Elevate the leg and apply cold packs to manage swelling. It should start to subside.
5. Wound Care: Keep the surgical site clean and dry. Be vigilant for signs of infection, such as increased redness or discharge. No need for frequent change of dressing
6. Regular Check-ins: Schedule and attend follow-up appointments with your surgeon. Generally at 14 days the stitches are taken out.Listen to your body, and reach out to your orthopedic team with any concerns.

TKR Series: Immediately After Surgery to 5 Days Post-Operation (at Hospital)
Total Knee Replacement (TKR) is a major procedure, and understanding the immediate post-operative period is essential for patients. Here's the typical journey in the first five days:
1. Immediate Recovery: Post-surgery, you'll be in a recovery room for a few hours. Monitoring vital signs and pain levels is crucial at this stage. Following the surgery one may expect few tubes coming out of body - 1. From the back(epidural catheter) for pain relief, 2. Foley’s catheter for drainage of urine, 3. Drain from operated site. These tubes generally comes of in 2 days time
2. Pain Management: Pain is expected, but controlled. You'll be provided with pain-relief medications to ensure comfort.
3. Physical Therapy: Early mobilization aids recovery. Within a day, therapists may guide you to perform basic movements.
4. Swelling Control: Expect some swelling. Techniques like elevating the leg or using cold packs help manage it.
5. Wound Monitoring: Medical staff will regularly check your surgical site, ensuring cleanliness and watching for signs of infection.
6. Education: Hospital staff will guide you on post-operative care, preparing you for the subsequent healing stages.
Engage actively with your orthopedic team, and remember to communicate any discomfort or concerns
