Was just at a pharmacy in Hyderabad. A gent asked the lady in a white coat behind the counter if a certain item had side effects. She told him loudly "it's natural, so you're safe". I was standing next to them and said "Ma'am, the datura plant, castor seeds and a cobra's bite are all natural. But try them and you can die. Natural doesn't mean either safe or healthy. Please don't use that logic on customers." Silence in the store.

Chalk a teeny tiny win against misinformation that "all-natural" or "natural" means anything good. Some of the world's deadliest toxins occur in nature: co***ne comes from the coca leaf, hemlock is just one of many famed natural poisons and some of the unhealthiest things in the world's food intakes: sugar and starch are entirely natural.

In fact, many "natural" compositions in alternative therapies like Ayurveda and Unani medicine are toxic for humans. And they don't have to go through the kind of testing that allopathic drugs go through to be sold.

It is disastrous to expect that they're safer for you just because they came from nature. In fact, it pays to be doubly beware of anything called "natural" before you consume it.
