Marie Van Brittan Brown, an African-American inventor was born in Jamaica, New York in 1922 and lived in Queens until her death in 1999.

A nurse by profession, she was married to an electrician, Albert. Both of them had uncertain work hours and the ever-increasing crime rates in Queens had Brown constantly on the edge when the bell rang.

The police response was slow in the day and not having a source to rely on, she invented a mechanism which is known today as the first ever Home security system.

The invention which consisted of a wireless network, a camera, an alert button and three peepholes, formed the basis of the Secured System we know today.

A camera installed on the other side of the door captured pictures of the visitor, a Voice system enabled her to talk to the person and incase of an intrusion, a button allowed Brown to alert the local police.

Marie and her husband filed for a patent which was granted in 1966. Though Marie is well known in the Black community it’s high time that everyone in the world knows this African American woman who paved way for the relief of many residents around the globe.

India is constantly innovating in the field of science, technology and healthcare. Over the years, thanks to innovators who come from different corners of the country, our lives have changed for the better. is an effort towards bringing to you some of the latest innovations and their possible impact on us.

The first in the series is a low-cost and portable version of an oxygen generator – a device that can draw oxygen from the surrounding air and supply it to ventilators or directly to the patient. Developed by a team of scientists at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, this device costs a fraction of what oxygen generators available in the market cost & would help India fight COVID-19. The team has further brought down the cost by building the electronics on Arduino boards & the device can be used even in remote villages.
