Are you at a risk of having stroke??
Yesterday was a world stroke day. Various organizations world wide are taking this opportunity to spread awareness about brain stroke , which we commonly term as paralysis or 'lakwa'. We as a stroke awareness page would like to share some details that may help you, if need arises.
We would like to devide it in 3 posts
1) To recognise whether you are having risk factors that can lead to brain stroke?
2) How to recognize that stroke is happening??
3) Where should we go if stroke is spotted?
Here in 1st post (of series of 3) we would like to discuss 1) To recognise whether you are having risk factors that can lead to brain stroke?
We all have seen that some people are at high risk of getting stroke than others. We can identify such high risk factors in them and try to eliminate it in order to decrease chance of having stroke.
For assessing risk, we can use chart provided by American heart Association/American Stroke Association (posted as image)
We would like to give simplified direction to use this chart.
• For each risk factor, select the box [higher risk or lower risk] that applies to you.
• Select only one box per risk factor either high or low risk.
• Add up your total for each vertical column i.e. red and violet.
1. Is your blood pressure greater than 120/80mm/Hg? Yes is RED
2. Have you been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation? (It is a condition where heart beats irregularly) Yes is RED
3. Is your fasting blood sugar greater than 100 mg/dl? Yes is RED
4. Is your body mass index BMI greater than 25kg/m?(BMI can be calculated by dividing your weight with square of your height in meter) Yes is RED
5. Is your diet high in saturated fat, trans fat, Sweetened beverages, salt, excess calories?( Fast food, Cola drinks, high salt) Yes is RED
6. Is your total blood cholesterol greater than 180mg/dL?(You can find this in your blood Cholesterol report) Yes is RED
7. Have you been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus? Yes is RED
8. Do you participate in 40 minutes of moderate to Vigorous physical activity 3-4 days a week? No is RED
9. Do you have a family history of stroke?Yes is RED
10. Do you smoke? Yes is RED
TOTAL SCORE [Your points of total RED]
With each RED your risk of stroke increses.
If you have one or two RED and other factors are not investigated yet, ask your doctor for investigation not done yet.
For any RED point you need to consult Neurologist to reduce risk of having stroke.
