In a world focussed on weight loss, diets and food rules, food guilt is a common occurrence. Food should bring a sense of joy, connection, and satisfaction while it’s fueling your body. while it’s fueling your body. But for many people who experience food guilt or shame, it can trigger negative emotions instead. Unchecked guilt and shame about eating can seriously mess with your relationship with food, not to mention your mental health and well-being. Just make sure you seek out someone experienced with disordered-eating and body-image issues. It’s definitely a different approach than some other type of nutrition counseling. It’s not a diet approach, but one that involves honouring all foods and knowing how to incorporate all foods into your life in a healthy way, unless you're allergic to them.

Behaviours mentioned in the post are very much normalised nowadays by our society. However, it indicates disordered relationship with food and exercise.
Our bodies needs to be nourished instead of punished. It needs adequate rest and getting involved in activity which you love instead of being preoccupied with calorie counting and feeling guilty for eating your favourite food.

Self talk
Is really good and effective technique to boost up your self esteem and to cope up with our negative feelings, emotions & thoughts. It's important to find a way to make your goals come true & find reasons to live your life with happiness. As I was teaching last week to second year Nutrition students for the subject Nutrition Counselling & communication, one most important thing I taught was to convey importance of self talk to your clients/ patients. Research shows that people with a positive inner dialogue have improved performance in day-to-day tasks, and better overall physical and mental health. Positive self-talk can help you overcome obstacles, solve problems, and cope effectively with the challenges of everyday life. But keeping yourself in a positive frame of mind can be a challenge, especially if you’ve spent much of your life thinking negatively. All 30 students in one batch are learning same thing and might give roughly same kind of meal plan to their patients, though one thing that is going to make all of them different is their counselling skills, do you agree?

And I am proud to say we have clients coming for our consultation year after year just because of the rapport we build up with them and mainly our counselling skills.

Thanks to Instagram, peeking into someone’s life—nitty-gritty food choices included—has become absurdly routine. Trends like “what I eat in a day” videos and mini meal breakdown vlogs allow us to see what our favorite influencers, home cooks, dietitians, and personal trainers eat on a daily basis. A simple recipe video can be a great way to share something you enjoy with others, but a recipe video with nutrition or diet advice attached is problematic because it becomes prescriptive—’eat this if you want this result’—and can be triggering. And disorder eating cases are on rise due to same reason. And the ultimate truth is that no one on Instagram [or any social media platform], even if that person is a dietitian or a doctor, understands your unique health situation. What’s healthy for one person may not be healthy for another. And we take in depth 30-45minutes just to understand our clients before prescribing meal plan, so you can understand how generalized advise you get while you follow those videos. Failing to take your unique nutritional situation and requirements into account may also worsen symptoms caused by digestive disorders, like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), due to having different food triggers than other individuals.

who think they are eating well, who are free from clinical conditions,
Who are obese &
Sometimes even among those who are popping numerous supplements.

As you would have seen our last post on labels (refer last post) and how to save yourself from market gimmicks. Now in this post we bring to you comparison of the most basic drink (water) in the world and the most preferred beverage (cold drinks). You all would have definitely heard that cold drinks are not good for health and that's actually so true. Just look that at the labels of both the drinks and you will come to know why one is better than other. Cold drinks are a source of empty calories. Empty calories mean that it doesn't give your body any useful nutrients. Cold drinks are loaded with so much sugar, color and so much more artificial stuff. On the other hand water has only benefits. Not drinking enough water also has its own consequences. So say "YES" to water and "NO" to empty calories.

Have you ever read a label behind the products that you shop? Most of you will answer "NO". Reading a food label is as important as checking if the product's expiry date.

1) False Claims - Ingredients list is very important, it tells us whether the claims mentioned on product are true or false. For e.g. Claim is protein rich product then see what source of protein is there in the ingredients list or how much protein are you getting per serving. You may see product claimed as sugar free but while scanning ingredients you will see product does contain sugar but in different form.

2) Size matters. Serving size is always the first item on the label. All other information is based on that serving size. The servings per container tell you know how many portions are in the whole box, package, or can. Beware: many packages contain more than one serving. Look at your orange juice for example. If the label says 125 calories per 150ml serving and your breakfast includes a 300ml glass, then you've taken in 250 calories from the juice alone. (About as many calories as you'd find in many chocolate bars.)

3) Look for food products that have ingredients you recognize and want to include in your diet, for example on bread you might look for ‘whole grains’ as one of the first ingredients. Product ingredients are listed by quantity — from highest to lowest amount. This means that the first ingredient is what the manufacturer used the most.
Reduce the number of foods in your grocery cart that have long and confusing ingredient lists, as these are typically highly processed items. A good rule of thumb is to scan the first three ingredients, as they make up the largest part of what you're eating.

So always read the label and get aware of the market gimmicks. Being able to decipher between the two is a really good skill that can help you take ownership of your health Post your questions in the comment section and we will get back to you. Let us know in the comments below if this post was helpful for you. Feel free to share it with your friends and family.
