Philosophy is meant to make life easier through knowledge. The YOGA philosophy of Maharshi Patanjali centers around the understanding of our own mind which can in the words of the celebrated poet Milton - create a hell out of heaven or a heaven out of hell.
Every philosophy evolves on the basis of certain foundations that it lays out as being REAL. The Philosophy of Yoga is based upon the foundation of two existing realities which are 1. PRAKRITI or Matter & 2. PURUSHA or Spirit or Consciousness.
PRAKRITI is that side of our nature that is constantly changing and evolving ALL the time. It is the opposite of steadiness and stability.
Our sense organs are designed to be outwardly focused and they are constantly sending data and info received from the environment to our mind during our waking hours.
The Universe also falls in the realm of Prakriti and as we can see it changes all the time, our body and mind also are also changeful. Mind, the subtlest aspect of nature, too is extremely unsteady as we know from our personal experience.
The ultimate goal of each and every technique of Yoga is to steady the mind and the body and Yoga is a conscious effort in that direction.
Can we imagine a life without DOING anything which encompasses all our sensory experiences to engage with. Our senses are constantly in touch with the world around us and giving us all the info, all the data by default, unasked. It is this engagement with Prakriti , the world of matter, which provides us the reason to be . and it serves us with pleasurable as well as painful experiences repeatedly.
This is that 1 side of human life and human nature , which according to Maharishi Patanjali is responsible for painful experiences in the long run, if we do not understand it and tame it.
