'Cream Fungus' in MP: After Black & White Fungus, Jabalpur reports a new fungal infection

Due to elimination of excessive symbiotic bacteria due to COVID-19 antibiotics, several fungal infections are witnessed in patients infected with coronavirus.

After cases of Black, White, and Yellow fungus, a new variant of fungal infection, 'cream fungus' has been detected from a patient in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur. According to the officials, a case of cream fungus has been reported with Black fungus in the COVID-19 infected victim. The patient is getting treated in the ENT department of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College. Cases of Black and White fungus were already getting reported on a higher scale in the district.

Medical experts have enlightened that the cases of fungal infections are coming out due to excessive use of COVID-19 antibodies which are eliminating important and symbiotic bacteria from the body. These bacterias are significant for eradicating fungus from human body. Currently, there are 106 patients in the medical college, out of which 39 patients have also been operated from fungal infections.

Madhya Pradesh Fungal infection cases

The state has 752 cases of Black Fungus and last week Madhya Pradesh had declared mucormycosis as an epidemic. Last week, a 55-year-old man from Jabalpur had diagnosed with White Fungus after getting cured from COVID-19. The state is facing additional crisis of fungal infections while the coronavirus situation has improved at a stage where state officials are ready to start the unlock process of infection-induced restrictions. However, the fungal infection outbreak is a huge concern for state authorities. Coincidentally, both white and cream fungal infection's first case was reported in Jabalpur.

Bhubaneswar: Even as the country is grappling with the Covid-19 Pandemic and lakhs of people are getting infected, a new disease Mucormycosis or the Black Fungus is slowly emerging as a new health hazard. In the last few days, an increased number of Covid recovered patients have been found to be infected with the fatal Black Fungus disease. States particularly Gujarat, Maharashtra and Delhi have reported an alarming increase in the number of Black Fungus patients. Otherwise very rare, the trend today is mostly the Covid-19 recovered patients are getting infected with it. This dangerous fungal infection mostly occurs weeks to months after recovery from Covid-19 and is caused by a group of moulds known as mucormycetes present naturally in the atmosphere.

Black Fungus affects mainly people who are or were on treatment for diseases which reduce their ability to fight environment pathogens. When the fungal spores get inhaled by individuals, the Sinuses or lungs of such individuals get affected. It affects the sinuses, the brain and the lungs and can be life-threatening in diabetic or severely immunocompromised individuals such as cancer patients.

• Signs of Black Fungus include pain and redness around eyes or nose along with fever, headache, cough, shortness of breath, blood and vomiting
• Symptoms of Sinusitis such as nasal blockage or congestion and nasal discharge
• Stuffy and bleeding nose, swelling of and pain in the eyes, drooping of eyelids
• Black patches on skin around the nose
• Pain on the cheek bone, one-sided facial pain, numbness or swelling
• Chest pain, pleural effusion, worsening of respiratory symptoms

The advisory issued by ICMS says “Mucormycosis, if uncared for, may turn fatal. Sinuses or lungs of such individuals get affected after fungal spores are inhaled from the air,”. The warning symptoms include pain and redness around eyes and nose, fever, headache, coughing, shortness of breath, bloody vomits and altered mental status. In Covid-19 patients with diabetes and immuno-suppressed individuals, one must suspect of mucormycosis if there is sinusitis, one-side facial pain or numbness, blackish discoloration over the bridge of the nose or palat

Few important points made by these qualified Doctors :

1) Plasma therapy is not at all recommended in the 2nd wave by WHO or any other Organisations around the World. It is waste of time & money.
2) If needed, CT scan of lungs to be done between 5th to 7th day, otherwise report may be misguiding.
3) No need of any Medication in the 1st week of infection, except Paracetamol (if fever persists) along with Multivitamins & Zinc. In case of Fever Paracetamol should not be taken SOS but regularly in 6 hourly interval.
4) If symptoms continue, Condition worsens in 2nd week between 7th & 10th day, so pl. keep close monitoring on Oxygen level, Coughing frequency, Pulse & Temperature.
5) If Condition worsens in 2nd week, without wasting time start treatment with Steroids in consultation with Doctor. Steroid treatment is the most effective way of treating Lungs infection.
6) Oxygen concentrator of 5L is not suitable, as they probably cannot bring back Oxygen saturation above 94 continuously.
7) Proning is now officially approved method for improving Oxygen level.
8) Positive persons after becoming negative are safe from infection for next 90-180 days.
9) Positive persons should take their 1st or 2nd Jab after 90 days of becoming negative, as they have sufficient antibody for next 90 days at least.
10) Condition of young people in the age group of 30-45 yrs. worsens suddenly as they have strong capacity to hold back till a point and thereafter collapses suddenly. Close monitoring is essential and each passing day is crucial.Every body reacts differently.plz consult doctor according to your body condition.
