Stroke is the third leading cause of disability. Among stroke survivors, approximately 45% have cognitive deficits (memory, ability to understand and respond, problem-solving, decision-making, etc.), 30% are unable to walk without assistance, 25% are institutionalized, and 25% are dependent on activities of daily living due to disability.
TIA (a warning sign of paralysis that reverses in 24 hours) is a major risk factor for stroke and requires urgent evaluation to detect specific causes that may need immediate treatment.
Overall, approximately 10% of patients who have a TIA will have a stroke within 90 days, with almost half occurring within 2 days.
As these presentations are painless, patients often neglect or report to the doctor at a very late stage, by which time the damage has already occurred.
Any limb weakness, difficulty talking, visual disturbance, tingling sensation or clumsiness, difficulty in walking, sudden headache, etc., should not be ignored, and an urgent visit to the doctor within 4.5 hours of presentation is crucial.
There are many risk factors, but high blood pressure, abnormal blood lipids, poorly controlled diabetes, a strong family history of stroke, smoking, and alcohol consumption are common ones that need to be addressed.
