Let’s be honest…

Getting your child to eat the food they’re served is not the easiest task in the world.

So shoving a screen in front of them just makes our task a whole lot easier, right?

Well, in the long run, this idea couldn’t be more wrong.

Because what starts off as showing the child YouTube rhymes or Peppa Pig while eating, will slowly turn into a habit that the child finds hard to break away from.

And once this habit forms, the child won’t even want to try to escape from it.

Increased focus on eating and the dining table environment will lead to your child relishing the food they’re eating as well as eating exactly as much as they need and not any more or less.

So, if under-eating or overeating is a problem your child has, it may come down to this root cause.

Holistic health coaches will always urge you to savour each morsel before consuming. Embrace your food, be grateful for each last grain that you're having. This will help the brain send the right signals that triggers proper digestion and it also helps the heart to send adequate blood supply to the organs.

If you aren’t mindful of what’s going into your mouth, you don’t process that information. That means it doesn’t get stored in your memory bank. And without a memory of having eaten, you are more likely to eat again sooner than you might have if you ate mindfully.

Applied to eating, mindfulness includes noticing the colors, smells, flavors, and textures of your food. It also means getting rid of distractions like television or reading or working on your computer.

If mindful eating is a new concept for you, start gradually. Eat one meal a day or week in a slower, more attentive manner.

Severely limiting certain foods simply heightens your awareness of them. Just think: If you know you shouldn't eat brownies, seeing one turns your sensors on.

Restricting yourself is not the key here. It's about eating in moderation, understanding what you eat and not just simply punishing yourself when you see food.

I want to make a note about the therapeutic relationship from the therapist’s perspective. Although it is a professional relationship and there are clear boundaries and parameters, the connection and desire to help is no less heartfelt or genuine than in any other relationship that exists outside the office.

Appropriate boundaries allow therapists to do good work in a safe manner, but they should not be a barrier to meaningful relational connection within the therapeutic setting. Ultimately, finding a skilled therapist with whom you feel safe and connected can provide the foundation for a powerful and life-enhancing therapeutic experience.
