"Bhootnath and the Diwali Surprise"
Inspired by
"Aaargh!" My friend Rohan jumped out from behind the old banyan tree, wearing a scary mask with a long, white beard. "Did I scare you, Priya?"
I giggled. "You look like Bhootnath! But where did you get that cool mask?"
Rohan grinned. "It's for Halloween! My cousin in America told me about it. We wear costumes, go 'trick-or-treating', and get lots of sweets!"
Costumes? Trick-or-treating? I was confused. It sounded like some kind of magic show! Rohan explained that on Halloween, people dress up as ghosts and creatures like Bhootnath. He showed me pictures on his phone – kids dressed as witches with pointy hats, superheroes with shiny capes, and skeletons that glowed in the dark.
"Wow!" I said. "It's like Diwali, but with spooky decorations!"
Rohan nodded. "Yeah! We can make our own costumes and visit our neighbours. We say 'Trick or treat?' and they give us sweets!"
This sounded like an adventure! We decided to make our own costumes. I used an old white sheet to become a ghost, while Rohan used black paper to become a bat with big wings. We even made scary masks with big eyes, just like in Rohan's pictures.
As the sun went down, we started our adventure with empty bags. My heart thumped like a dhol as we reached the first house. "Trick or treat?" we shouted, a little nervously.
Aunty Meena opened the door. She looked surprised, then smiled. "Wah! You're the first ones to come trick-or-treating!" She gave us a handful of sweets – toffees, chocolates, and even some sweet peda!
Our bags filled up as we went from house to house. Some gave us biscuits, others gave us chips, and some even gave us handfuls of crunchy boondi! It was like Diwali and Holi together, with fun costumes and yummy treats!
We reached home with bags full of goodies. We sat under the twinkling stars, sharing our treats and laughing. Halloween, this new festival, was the most exciting day ever!
