And that, in itself, is progress

The experiment was supposed to last 2 weeks. They had to terminate it in 6 days. That tells you everything.

The Stanford Prison Experiment (1971) by Philip Zimbardo originally meant to answer whether brutality in prisons comes from people’s personalities or the power of the situation. Healthy college students were randomly assigned to act as “guards” or “prisoners” in a mock prison at Stanford University.
Very quickly, the roles took over, showing how strongly situations and social roles can shape behaviour.

Within days, guards began humiliating prisoners by
- forcing them to do endless push-ups
- waking them in the middle of the night for roll calls
- stripping them naked
- placing bags over their heads
- locking them in solitary confinement
- referring to them only by numbers instead of names.

Meanwhile, prisoners showed
- intense stress
- emotional breakdowns
- anxiety
- helplessness.

The study dramatically illustrated key psychological concepts like
1. role internalization (people absorbing the behaviors expected of their roles)
2. deindividuation (loss of personal identity leading to reduced accountability)
3. the overwhelming power of situational forces over individual personality.

Why was it unethical?

- Severe psychological harm
- Inadequate informed consent
- Participants’ right to withdraw was unclear
- Researcher's dual role (Zimbardo acted as prison superintendent)blurring the line between researcher and authority figure.
- Poor monitoring and lack of intervention
