A new artwork has been unveiled which celebrates breastfeeding at the School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin.
“Seeing depictions of breastfeeding in public spaces encourages a culture of breastfeeding as a normal part of life and commonly seen in society. Having breastfeeding depicted in our school reinforces our commitment to making breastfeeding the norm and viewing it as optimum infant nutrition.”

This year, Dr Manisha Gogri, received this award for her excellent contribution to the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding.

A common medical cause for an infant failing to thrive is not getting sufficient feedings at night. When babies wake frequently to nurse they are only asking for what they need to thrive. Nearly all babies know intuitively how much nursing they need for nourishment and for comfort. When your baby awakens to nurse at night, respect his or her judgment. Most breastfeeding infants sleep best snuggled right next to mom. Be open to trying various sleeping arrangements until you find the right one for your family. Breastmilk at night contains sleep inducing hormone for the baby. And paradoxically it also helps the mother get better sleep!

Very happy to share that we just finished conducting a three day workshop in Mumbai: Tongue Tie: A Holistic Approach - which was attended by Pediatricians, Physical therapists, Dentists, GPs and Lactation Professionals including IBCLCs. The facilitators were: Dr. Manisha Gogri- MBBS, CBE, IBCLC (since 15 years): Dr Zinal Shah- MBBS, DCH, IBCLC practicing pediatrician and lactation consultant: Dr Ankita Shah - MDS, Pediatric Dentist, tongue Tie and TMJ specialist and Myofunctional Therapist: Zia Nath-BA, BCST, RCST, ICSB-Craniosacral therapist and Trauma informed physical therapist. This workshop was approved by IBLCE for 20 CERPS. It was a great opportunity to share the collective wealth of knowledge and experience that we all have gathered working as a team for over a decade. We will continue to provide valuable learning through our successful experiences of holistic treatment of the mother baby dyad facing difficulties in breastfeeding due to oral restrictions. The highlights for the participants were looking at breastfeeding through the lens of body work, practically learning how to recognise restrictions, and the supportive measures before and after release, as well as case presentations from our vast database of hundreds of documented cases-some followed up right until toddlerhood.

There are many breastfeeding problems that are brushed under the carpet as we have “easier” options available like formula or bottle feeding.
However, understanding the dynamics & mechanics of breastfeeding allows us to support a diverse range of challenges.

- functional dynamics of the frenulum
- mobility of the tongue
- ⁠structural compensations of the cranium, jaw & spine
- ⁠muscle attachments and nerve supply
- ⁠the airway passage
all work in coordination for a successful suck-swallow-breath reflex and a smooth breastfeeding journey.

Just as the body works as a unit of multiple functions, so we need to work in collaboration including multiple methodologies in the field. It takes a team to treat a complex function like breast feeding just like it takes a village to raise a child.

Fondly remembering my time with Penny Simkin in the year 2009.
Her departure on April 11, 2024 marks a tremendous loss to the global doula community, childbirth educators, perinatal researchers, families she supported, and the countless lives she touched through her pioneering work in childbirth and maternity care.
Her book, The Birth Partner, remains a beloved resource for me and for everyone involved in the childbirth process, illustrating her commitment to not only the physical but also the emotional well-being of doulas and families during childbirth.
Her legacy will continue to inspire and guide many who carry forward her mission to improve childbirth and support families around the world.
May her soul rest in peace, and may her legacy of love, support, and education continue to flourish in the years to come.
