Yes- clear fluid coming out of the nose must never be ignored and treated as hay fever or allergy. Spontaneous(without an antecedent history of injury) is well known and more frequent in obese middle aged ladies with some calcium lack and bone loss. if the fluid does not “string”on the fingers or does not “starch“and stiffen a handkerchief it must be tested for beta 2 transferrin which is present ONLY in cerebrospinal fluid of the brain. Later scanning-CT and MRI scans- are necessary for pinpointing the site of leak. Surgery is done using telescopes and powered instruments and the leak is usually closed with tissue taken from the patients own thigh. results are very good and certainly a a large brain operation can be avoided.
We have done many such patients in the past 30 years with very good results.
