Natural sweeteners are sugar substitutes that are often promoted as healthier alternatives to sugar or other sugar substitutes. They contain calories and nutrients, are metabolized by the body, and vary in their effects as they pass through the body. Some common natural sweeteners include honey, agave syrup, maple syrup, jaggery and kakvi (liquid jaggery), date sugar, coconut sugar, molasses, yacon syrup, stevia, monk fruit sweetener, and yastimadhu. While some natural sweeteners may be suitable for all age groups, it is important to choose the one that best fits your needs and preferences and to consume them in moderation. Some low calorie sweeteners may cause nausea, bloating, and indigestion in some individuals, so it is important to speak to a healthcare provider before including them in your diet. Fruits, dried fruits, and unsweetened berries that are packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and natural sweetness are also good alternatives to sugar.

Artificial sweeteners are synthetic sugar substitutes used in food and beverages to make them taste sweet. They are much sweeter than sugar, and some are non-caloric. They are used in food because they can provide a sweet taste without adding calories, which can be beneficial for people looking to manage their weight or for diabetics. Some studies have linked the consumption of certain artificial sweeteners with cancer, but the FDA has reviewed these studies and determined that they are safe for consumption. However, moderation is key when it comes to consuming artificial sweeteners, and they should not be used by pregnant women, children, people with IBS, or people with phenylketonuria. It is also important to check the ADI for each sweetener you consume to avoid overconsumption.
