Helen Keller Institute for Deaf & Deafblind, Mumbai

Helen Keller Institute for Deaf & Deafblind, Mumbai Helen Keller Institute for Deaf & Deafblind (HKIDB) is a pioneering institute for the education, training and rehabilitation of the Deaf and Deafblind.

HKIDB is recognized by the State and Central government and many international organizations as a premier institute for the development of children with disabilities, especially Deafblindness. We have assisted many NGOs in starting services for Deafblind in India & other countries like Singapore and Malaysia. (Late) Mrs. Beroz Vacha founded the institute with two other teachers in 1977 with the strong belief that no one is incapable of being taught. From a room with 2 children to a school of 200 students, the journey has been long but the work undertaken extremely satisfying. Amongst the numerous awards to the institute, the one that stands out the most is the National Award for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment in public recognition of the institute's outstanding performance. Objectives:
• Education, training and rehabilitation for the Deaf, Deafblind and Deafblind with additional disabilities
• Ensure that Persons with Disability (PwD) are independent and self-reliant
• Ensure that PwD integrate seamlessly into mainstream society
• Guidance and instruction to parents and guardians of PwD to help them understand and communicate with their ward better
• To be the best institution in India to provide excellent academic and practical teacher training
• To highlight, to the public, the problems faced by PwD and offer solutions to authorities in power, government or otherwise, to make the environment disabled-friendly

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of a beloved member of our HKIDB family, Mr. Mahesh Joshi.

Mahesh was a dual talent within our organization, serving as a Graphic Designer for the Braille Press and a Block Printing Designer at our Vocational Training Unit. Beyond his incredible skills, Mahesh was a fun-loving, hardworking, and selfless person who had a unique gift for bringing a smile to everyone’s face.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family especially his wife Seema and his daughter Mrudula during this difficult time.

He will be deeply missed by his colleagues and the community he served so passionately.

Rest in peace, Mahesh.

Today marks one year since we lost a truly remarkable soul, Mr Sudit Parekh.

We deeply miss his gentle love and the genuine concern he showed for every person he met. He had a rare gift for making sure everyone around him was taken care of, both emotionally and professionally. He moved through life with such grace, wisdom, and a quiet strength that kept us all grounded.

Though he is no longer with us, his dedication to the well-being of others remains our guiding light.

Rest in peace, Parekh sir. You are forever in our hearts.

CHAMPIONS OF RESILIENCE!

We are bursting with pride to announce that our incredible students have won the 12th Create Foundation Trophy for Artistic Excellence! 🏆
Sharing this honour with their friends from another school. Our students showcased their talent under this year’s powerful theme: "The Power of Resilience."

For our students with Hearing Impairment and Deafblindness, resilience isn’t just a concept for a piece of art—it is their daily reality.

It is the courage to navigate a world built for sound and sight.
It is the persistence to master new ways of communicating.
It is the strength to turn barriers into bridges through creativity.

Through their performance/artwork, they proved that silence is not a lack of voice, but a different way of being heard. They don't just understand resilience; they live it every single day.

A Huge Salute to Our Trainers
A victory like this is a testament to the tireless dedication of our educators and trainers.

At HKI, the spirit of Christmas isn't found in the music or the decorations—it’s found in the resilience of our children.

Our children didn't just perform; they showed us what it means to be truly limitess. In a room filled with pure joy, we watched children dance to music they couldn’t hear and sing melodies from the heart while in wheelchairs. They reminded us that the spirit of Christmas doesn’t require perfect circumstances—only a joyful soul. Watching our students perform with such passion, transcending physical silence and mobility challenges, was a masterclass in courage.

We were so honored to have our 'Year-Round Santas'—our donors—in the audience. Your belief in these children gives them the strength to perform with such spectacular spirit. Thank you for being the heart of our HKI family.

Merry Christmas!

At Helen Keller Institute for Deaf and Deafblind, our mission goes beyond education, training, and therapy. We firmly believe that our learners have a fundamental right to joy, recreation, and the simple thrill of having fun.

Recently, we organized a Carnival that served a dual purpose. While the air was filled with laughter, there was serious work happening behind the scenes. Each stall—whether selling food or crafts—was a practical lesson in entrepreneurship. This event empowered both our parents and learners, giving them a platform to showcase their skills, manage transactions, and experience the pride of earning.

True inclusion isn't just about access; it is about creating spaces where everyone can participate, contribute, and celebrate life together on equal footing.

The event fostered a beautiful sense of togetherness, uniting families, staff, and learners in a shared experience of happiness.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to United Way and Fiserv for their generous support. Your partnership made this day of empowerment and joy possible.

Today marks the birthday of our unforgettable Dalal Sir.

Although a decade has elapsed since his passing, his benevolence and magnanimity have created an indelible mark on everyone at HKIDB. His legacy is a continuous source of inspiration.

Dalal Sir was a guiding light for children facing unique challenges and their relatives, offering unfaltering reassurance and aid. The staff at HKI fondly recall him as a nurturing patriarch, always extending warmth and profound affection to those in his circle.

We keenly feel your absence, Dalal Sir. On this meaningful day, we honour his life's journey and the monumental positive change he instigated. May his spirit continue to fuel our purpose.

With heartfelt devotion and lasting remembrance,

The Team at HKIDB

🌟 Disability Week Grand Finale: A Celebration of Inclusion, Awareness, and Resilience! 🌟

What an unforgettable way to close out our week! Day 5 was packed with joy, spirit, and meaningful connections as we attended two major events, truly embodying the true spirit of community and collaboration.

1️⃣ Event 1: Ability Mela at NIEPID
Our students had an absolutely fantastic time at the Ability Mela! It was a day of pure enjoyment:
* 🍽️ They savored delicious food and played fun games.
* 🎭 They shined brightly by taking part in cultural events.
The stalls put up by different NGOs in the disability sector were a testament to the true spirit of shared mission and support.

2️⃣ Event 2: Voltas Volunteering Mela
This full-day event was a powerful demonstration of corporate social responsibility and Inclusion!
* Over 800 Voltas employees visited various NGO stalls to engage in hands-on volunteering.
* They spent the day making various articles, creating a vibrant atmosphere of giving.
* We were thrilled that some of our students also joined in the process, working alongside the volunteers, actively promoting Awareness and breaking down barriers.

This beautiful week of celebration—filled with perseverance, resilience, and unwavering acceptance—has come to a great close.
Every interaction, every smile, and every moment of shared effort reminds us that when we work together, we build a world that truly values the unique abilities of all its members.

Thank you to everyone who made Disability Week so special!
