“The spark of life has to burn itself out. Why not give light to others while it burns?”
-Swami Chinmayananda-
This simple sentence carries a deep spiritual truth. Every one of us is given a spark of life at birth. This spark represents our time, energy, talents, intelligence, and opportunities. Just like a flame, this spark cannot last forever. Whether we choose to use it or not, one day it will naturally burn out. The real question Gurudev asks us is — how are we using this precious spark while it is still glowing?
In our daily lives, we often become preoccupied with our own comfort, success, and security. We worry about ourselves and forget the larger purpose of life. But a lamp that burns only for itself serves no purpose. Its true value is known only when it removes darkness and gives light to others. Similarly, a life lived only for oneself remains small, but a life lived for others becomes great.
Swami Chinmayananda teaches us that true fulfillment comes through selfless action. When we share our knowledge, guide someone who is lost, support a person in distress, or inspire young minds, we are giving light. Even a small act of kindness can brighten someone’s life. We need not wait for wealth, power, or status to serve — a kind word, a helping hand, and a compassionate heart are enough.
This message is especially relevant in today’s world, where stress, confusion, and negativity surround us. Society does not need more criticism; it needs more light. Each one of us can be that light by living values such as love, humility, discipline, and service — the very ideals Gurudev stood for.
Let us remember that when a candle lights another candle, its own flame does not diminish. In fact, the light only increases. In the same way, when we give, we grow. When we serve, we become stronger. When we inspire others, our own life gains deeper meaning.
As followers of Swami Chinmayananda’s vision, let us resolve to burn brightly — not for ego or recognition, but for the welfare of all. May our thoughts be noble, our actions selfless, and our lives a source of inspiration.
Let us give light while we burn.
Hari Om.
