Developing a -acquired not only makes it difficult for a patient to recover but also adds significantly to the hospital expenses. Globally, with HAIs have incurred costs that were 2.8 times higher than those for patients free from infection. This excess cost is a huge economic burden on a patient and are related to additional diagnostic tests and treatment, additional stay, and post discharge complications. An interesting article published on October 22nd 2015 clearly cites the need for Indian providers to get serious about control.
Hospital Acquired Infections are rapidly spreading across hospitals due to poorly maintained equipment, under staffing and exponential increase in the number of patients admitted to a every day. HAIs have known to even double the length of stay required at a hospital because of the additional infection developed.

There are different modes through which an agent may be transmitted from its natural reservoir to a susceptible host. This transmission could be either through direct or indirect contact. Direct-contact transmission involves a direct body surface-to-body surface contact and physical transfer of microorganisms between a susceptible host and an infected person. – care activities which bring a patient and a worker or two patients in contact lead to the spread of such infections.

Environmental surfaces across a facility act as reservoirs for bacterial and fungal gathering and proliferation. Medical devices form a crucial portion of based care but also predispose patients to over 8 lakh device-related infections annually. A staggering 50% of all HAIs are attributed to medical devices. In – hospital contamination of medical devices such as urinary catheters, intravenous infusion devices, hemodialysis, and respiratory therapy equipment cause HAIs. A shocking mortality rate of 12 – 80% is seen in such cases.
