Recently, I came across a powerful photo from a hospital in Egypt!

A surgeon was performing an emergency repair of a stab wound to the heart.
There was no time to wear a face shield. No time to step back for safety. Blood was splashing. The entire team, including the surgeon, anaesthetist, and nurses, stayed at the table, fully exposed, because every second meant the difference between life and death.

The patient survived. And that is what we signed up for.

But that picture made me pause.

In the rush to save a life, ๐ฐ๐ž ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ž๐ฌ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐ž๐ญ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐จ๐ฐ๐ง.

We step into ๐๐š๐ง๐ ๐ž๐ซ, ๐ข๐ง๐Ÿ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, ๐›๐ฅ๐จ๐จ๐-๐›๐จ๐ซ๐ง๐ž ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐ž๐ฌ, ๐ซ๐š๐๐ข๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ž๐ฑ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž, and ๐ž๐ฆ๐จ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฉ๐ก๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐ž๐ฑ๐ก๐š๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง.

Not because we donโ€™t value our safety, but because in that moment, nothing matters more than the life placed in our hands.

People often say surgeons are strong.

The truth is, ๐ฐ๐ž ๐š๐ซ๐ž ๐ก๐ฎ๐ฆ๐š๐ง.

๐–๐ž ๐›๐ฅ๐ž๐ž๐, ๐ฐ๐ž ๐›๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ค, ๐ฐ๐ž ๐ ๐ž๐ญ ๐ญ๐ข๐ซ๐ž๐. Yet we show up again because someone out there needs a chance to live.

Not just skill and science. It is sacrifice, responsibility and heart.

This is not a complaint. This is ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ข๐๐ž ๐ข๐ง ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง, ๐ข๐ง ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ญ๐ž๐š๐ฆ๐ฌ, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ฎ๐ง๐ฐ๐š๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ญ๐จ ๐œ๐š๐ซ๐ž.

I shared my perspectives as a surgeon on the growing challenge of ๐Œ๐ƒ๐‘๐Ž๐ฌ (๐Œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ข-๐ƒ๐ซ๐ฎ๐  ๐‘๐ž๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ง๐ญ ๐Ž๐ซ๐ ๐š๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ๐ฌ) and the practical steps we follow at ๐™๐ž๐ง ๐Œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ž๐œ๐ข๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐‡๐จ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ข๐ญ๐š๐ฅ to reduce infection risk and antibiotic resistance.

๐€๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐›๐ข๐จ๐ญ๐ข๐œ ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž is no longer a distant threat, itโ€™s a daily reality in clinical practice. Programmes like this bring together intensivists, microbiologists, surgeons and IPC teams to strengthen protocols, promote responsible antibiotic use, and improve patient outcomes.

Introduction

Dr Prasad Bhukebag is a practicing Consultant Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal, Bariatric & General Surgeon. After completing his MBBS from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (Belgaum), he did his Masters in General Surgery (MS) from Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, Bangalore. Thereafter, he pursued his Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery (FMAS) at Sir Gangaram Hospital,New Delhi under Prof PK Chowbey.

He has also successfully completed MRCS(Edinburgh) and MRCPS(Glasgow). He has completed the Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Law & Ethics (PGDMLE) from the one of top law school in India, National Law School Of India University.

His training in Bariatric Surgery includes Fellowships from E-Da Hospital (Kaohsiung, Taiwan), China Medical University Hospital (Taichung, Taiwan) under Dr CK Huang and AZ Sint Jan Hospital (Brugge, Belgium) under Dr Bruno Dillemans.

He was recently conferred the prestigious Fellowship of American College of Surgeons (FACS) in October 2019.
