Kizhi is an Ayurvedic therapy that involves using heated herbal boluses for relieving pain and for sudation purposes. Ela Kizhi, Navara Kizhi, Podi Kizhi, Naranga Kizhi etc. are different varieties of this therapy which last 45-60 minutes and are repeated daily over 7 to 14 days. The ingredients and steps are chosen according to the patient’s constitution and disease.

To prepare the Kizhi pouches the selected herbal ingredients are fried in oil and tied together in a soft cloth. These pouches are heated by dipping them in warm oil, warm medicated milk or decoction (as required) and are applied over the affected areas in long, circular and stamping strokes in different positions like Abhyanga. The poultices are reheated periodically throughout the session, after which the patient is allowed to rest for a while and then bath with warm water. This action increases the local circulation which helps reduce pain and inflammation and supports healing.

Why should you consume Karkidaka Kanji during the rainy season? 

During the Karkidaka month, the weather transition from hot to humid weather causes the derangement of Vata. This can lead to aches and pains, rigidity, fragility and weakness in the body. The digestive fire becomes weak affecting digestion and vitality. Consuming the traditional time-tested Karkidaka Kanji or gruel during this period strengthens your immunity, boosts the digestive fire and enhances overall health and vigour.

Karkidaka Kanji is basically an easy-to-digest gruel of Njavara rice, enriched with herbs and spices, taken as supper or early dinner for a period of 7, 21, or 42 days.
