An act of self harm originates from the need to communicate and seek help to manage the internal trauma and chaos.
When there is a lack of attunement between internal distress and available coping resources (internal and external resources) it creates a feeling of helplessness, therefore one tries to divert the energy to a more manageable crisis i.e. self-harm, where you can arrange supplies, look for medical ailments. Also the cut signifies as a vent of bottled up emotions which gives a short term relief.
