World Schizophrenia Day 24 th May
Schizophrenia is a type of psychiaric disorder, characterised by gross impairment in personality, touch with reality, reduced self care and reduced achievements. Like any other illness there is a spectrum of severity of illness, which ranges from almost unrecognisable symptoms to severely disabling symptoms.
Early symptoms -
Change in personality of person,
self absorbed behaviour,
reduced social interaction,
self talking, odd beliefs,
over religious beliefs,
impulsive behaviour,
reduced self care,
suspiciousness,
unexplained mood changes.
It affects approx 1 percent of world's population. Roughly there are 10 million persons suffering from schizophrenia in India. This illness can affects anyone irrespective of socioeconomic status, religion, ethnicity and gender. In males the usual age of onset is adolescent to 20 years of age and in females from 20-35 years.
Early diagnosis and treatment under professional guidance can eleminate the impact of this illness from person's life. Now we have number of treatment options available, ranging from medications to brain stimulation techniques. Selection of treatment stretegy depends on the severity of illness, response to previous treatment and informed selection of treatment option by patient / attendents.
Stigma is inevitable with psychiaric illnesses but awareness along with accessibility, reduces the chances of delay in diagnosis and treatment.
