I sometimes get enquiries from people who have had learnt Yoga elsewhere in the past, but get bored soon, because they find themselves doing the same practices every day. To overcome the boredom, they explore other Yoga teachers with the hope of learning something new...something more difficult. For some reason they seem to think that doing more variety of asanas is what Yoga is all about.
When they enquire, they generally already have one or two asanas in mind, that they want to learn and ask if I can teach them.
When I ask them if they are doing the Yoga they learnt elsewhere daily, the answer I get is a "NO".
Yoga is not about doing many different asanas. Neither is it about doing complicated asanas. Even the simplest asana or practice, when done daily, consistently over a period of time, can reap huge health benefits than trying out many asanas and doing neither of them consistently.
At Isha, we teach only 5 core Hatha Yoga practices, and we insist on doing them regularly. Sometimes, we also recommend that beginners learn only 1-2 of these core Hatha Yoga practices, depending on how much time a person can devote (certain practices can take over an hour).
So remember, the efficacy of Yoga is in the consistency, not in variety.
