What causes pulpitis?
Bacterial infection: The most common cause is bacteria entering the tooth through a cavity or crack, leading to inflammation.
Trauma: Injury to a tooth can also expose the pulp and cause inflammation.
Other factors: Deep cavities, crown preparations, repeated invasive procedures, cracked teeth, and grinding/clenching teeth can increase the risk.
Types of Pulpitis:
Reversible Pulpitis: Mild inflammation that can improve with treatment.
Irreversible Pulpitis: Severe inflammation that doesn't improve with treatment and can lead to pulp necrosis (pulp death).
Symptoms:
Pain: A common symptom is toothache, which can be sharp, throbbing, or persistent.
Sensitivity: Increased sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods.
Other symptoms: Swelling around the tooth and gums, and in severe cases, fever, chills, and swollen glands.
Treatment:
Reversible Pulpitis: Treatment may involve removing the decay and placing a filling.
Irreversible Pulpitis: Root canal therapy is often necessary to remove the infected pulp and seal the tooth.
If the pulp dies: If the pulp dies, a root canal or tooth extraction may be necessary.
Prevention:
Good oral hygiene: Regular brushing, flossing, and dental visits can help prevent tooth decay and pulpitis.
Prompt treatment of cavities: Addressing cavities early can prevent them from reaching the pulp.
