"2nd Annual Progress Review Meeting - StAr NCD Project, ICMR Hq. delhi"

The 2nd Annual Progress Review Meeting for the StAr NCD Project was successfully held on January 23rd, 2026, at the ICMR Headquarters in New Delhi. The primary objective of the meeting was to present the NPNCD work executed by the system over the past 7–8 months.

The attendees included the Director General, Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Dr. Ashoo Grover. Scientist G & Head, Delivery Research Division along with ICMR NCD National advisers, expert committee members, and P*s, Co-P*s, and research scientists from all four implementation sites.
During the session, Dr. Kalaiselvi S. presented the implementation research findings and best practices implemented by Nagpur (both ZP and NMC) to the Director General.

Representing the ZP Nagpur Health Department, Dr. Prashant Kapse also attended and shared his NPNCD program experiences. Our efforts were thoroughly discussed and well-received. Furthermore, the Director General suggested and discussed strategies to further enhance the NPNCD program this year.

Overall, it was a very fruitful meeting.

📸 Successful 6th Technical Support Unit (TSU) Meeting for NPNCD in Nagpur! 🤝💡

We are delighted to share the highlights from the 6th Technical Support Unit (TSU) Meeting for the National Programme for Non-Communicable Diseases (NPNCD), held on November 21st, 2025, at the Khedkar Sabhagruha, Zilla Parishad, Nagpur under ICMR StAr NCD Project.

This meeting was particularly significant due to the esteemed presence of the ICMR Expert Committee, ICMR Scientists, and Project Research Scientists from project sites across India, including Tripura, Andhra Pradesh, and Haryana.

Dr. Kalaiselvi S (Project PI) and Dr. Sujiv Akkilagunta (Project Co-PI) presented a comprehensive status update on the action points from the previous 5th TSU meeting.

Detailed discussions focused on crucial aspects of the NPNCD program: NCD Portal Strengthening, Patient Treatment Cards and Follow-up Tracking, Availability of Protocol Drugs (30 days dispensation), Treatment & Follow-up Register, Patient ID Card Implementation, and Enhancing Lab and Specialist Access at secondary facilities under DRP. 🏥📊

✨🙏The ICMR experts highly appreciated the commendable efforts taken by the Nagpur District in improving the NPNCD program despite various challenges. They also lauded the unique and proactive idea of establishing the Technical Support Unit (TSU) for NPNCD. 👏 Dr. Vishwajeet Bharadwaj shared his detailed experience regarding the NCD portal and the importance of the NCD Patient ID card.

Dr. Pradeep Deshmukh, Professor and Head, Department of Community Medicine, AIIMS Nagpur, has also given his valuable inputs.

Dr. Asim Inamdar (ADHO), along with all THOs and ZMOs, engaged in detailed discussions, reiterating the district's unwavering commitment to continuously improve the NPNCD program across all blocks. Ground-level experiences were also shared by the project and system personnel. 🚀

📑 ICMR StAr NCD Project | Expert Committee Visit to Nagpur District 🏥🔍

The ICMR STAR NCD Project Nagpur Site recently welcomed a distinguished Expert Committee and leading scientists to the Nagpur district to review the implementation of the ongoing NPNCD program in the project's implementation blocks.

The expert team’s objective was to thoroughly assess the implementation status, strengths, and challenges of the NPNCD program at the primary healthcare level in Nagpur district.
The Expert Committee included:

• Dr. Krishnamuthy Jayanna: Eminent Community Health Specialist & Senior Technical Advisor, University of Manitoba.

• Dr. Vishwajeet Kumar: CEO & Principal Scientist, Community Empowerment Lab, Lucknow.

• Dr. Roopa Shivshankar: Scientist E, Delivery Research Division, ICMR Hqrs. Delhi

Project Research Scientists, Research Associates, and Consultants from other StAr NCD project sites - namely Chittoor (Andhra Pradesh – CMC Vellore), Gomthi (Tripura – CCDC Delhi), and Faridabad (Haryana – AIIMS Delhi)—also joined for this valuable exposure visit.
The expert team, along with the AIIMS team, visited HWC Mondha, PHC Kanholibara, and UPHC Bande Navaz in Nagpur Urban.

The team interacted with Medical Officers, Community Health Officers, Taluka Health Officer (Dr. Pravin Padwe), Zonal Medical Officer (Dr. Dipankar Bhiwgade), and other Primary Healthcare Providers to gain a deep understanding of the on-ground implementation.

District NCD Cell officials present during the visit included Dr. Purvali Katkar (DPC), Dr. Vinod Pakdhune (Consultant NTCP), and Ms. Vanita (Social Worker).

Following the observations, the experts highly appreciated the dedication and efforts taken by the Primary Healthcare Providers in running the NPNCD program. Constructive suggestions for further improvement were also discussed. All visiting scientists praised the program ex*****on and gained significant insights from the experience.

🌟 Aarogyadeep NCD Patient Support Group (PSG) Meeting at UPHC Bande Nawaz (Nagpur Urban) 🌟 Organized by ASHA Workers with support from the ICMR-STAR NCD Team.

The session started with greetings and introductions. The purpose of the gathering was to raise awareness about Non-Communicable Diseases and how to prevent them through healthy habits along with the importance of treatment adherence.

Short summaries of previous PSGs were shared, and participants were asked to think about what causes NCDs. This led to active discussion and sharing of ideas.

People were then divided into small groups for fun and educational activities:
- A game called "Dump Charades" helped identify risk factors
- The "Traffic Light Game" showed which foods are healthy and which are not
- "Mindfulness" activity was taken for relaxation
- Blood Pressure and Random blood sugar were checked for every participant of group
- Staff nurses and ASHA workers guided the discussions

MO Dr. Sharad Dhole participated actively in each session, explaining the reasons and things to apply for NCDs

The session focused on modifiable risk factors like to***co, alcohol, unhealthy food, and lack of exercise, and also talked about non-modifiable factors such as age and family history.

The event saw full participation from the UPHC team—including the Medical Officer, staff nurses, lab technician, pharmacists, and even the local corporator, showing strong community support.

The session ended with encouraging words from the President of the Group, reminding everyone that small changes in daily life can lead to big improvements in health.

📢 ASHA Training on NPNCD Program at PHC Mansar, Block Ramtek.

On November 12, 2025, the team from StAr NCD Project, Department of Community Medicine, AIIMS Nagpur successfully conducted a comprehensive training for ASHA Sevikas belonging to PHC Mansar.
This initiative falls under the recently expanded STAR NCD Project, with Ramtek being one of the three new blocks selected.

ASHA workers play a critical role in the NPNCD program. The training focused on essential tasks, including:

• Line listing of the 30+ age group.
• Filling out the Community Based Assessment Checklist (CBAC) forms and family folders. (Including brief orientation on CBAC App based entries)
• Community mobilization for population-based screening camps.
• Follow-up household visits for NCD patients.
• Creation of patient support groups.
• Measurement of Blood Pressure

A total of 34 ASHAs and 4 ASHA Facilitators were trained by the STAR NCD Project Staff from the AIIMS team. The session was highly fruitful and will significantly strengthen NCD prevention and control efforts in the Ramtek block.

Orientation Meeting of Health Care Providers of Nehru Nagar Zone, NMC Nagpur
October 16, 2025

An orientation meeting was conducted at the ZMO Office, Nehru Nagar Zone, with Medical Officers and GNMs by the ICMR StAr NCD Project team to strengthen Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) services across UPHCs and UHWCs in the Nehru Nagar zone.
The session began with introductions, followed by an orientation on the ICMR StAr NCD Project delivered by the Project Team from AIIMS Nagpur. The team emphasized the importance of the StAr NCD Project as a National Health Research Priority Project and explained its core objectives in detail.

Dr. Mubashera Khan (Assistant Professor, DCM, AIIMS Nagpur) briefed participants on the project objectives, the current NCD scenario, implementation strategies, and the need to enhance enrollment, screening, treatment, follow-up, and control rates.

During the discussion, Dr. Narendra Bahirwar sir (Additional MOH, NMC Nagpur) emphasized the importance of improving screening coverage and highlighted gaps in NCD portal entries due to inadequate training and logistical challenges. Medical Officers and Public Health Manager were encouraged to ensure timely NCD portal data entry and make necessary indents for BP apparatus and glucometers.

The discussion also included strategies to improve participation during Urban Health and Nutrition Days (UHND), address NCD medicine shortages, and explore solutions such as HBT clinics to reach the working-age population.

The meeting concluded with a collective commitment to strengthen NCD screening, follow-up, and control activities through improved coordination and capacity-building.

ICMR StAr NCD Project Orientation and NCD Portal Training of Primary Health Care Providers of Ramtek Block:

On October 16, 2025, Dr. Smita Kakde (Taluka Health Officer, Ramtek) organized an orientation on the ICMR StAr NCD Project, AIIMS Nagpur and training on the NCD portal for primary healthcare providers in Ramtek.

The participants, totaling approximately 110 healthcare providers, included Medical Officers, Community Health Officers, ANMs, Staff Nurses, Health Assistants (HAs), Multi-Purpose Workers, ASHA Facilitators, and Data Entry Operators.

The orientation on the ICMR StAr NCD project was delivered by the Project Team from AIIMS Nagpur. They emphasized the importance of STAR NCD as a National Health Research Priority Project and clearly explained its core objectives.

Following this, detailed training on the NCD portal was conducted by Mr. Saurabh Zhodape, WHO STS. This comprehensive session covered the procedures for the CBAC, patient enrollment, screening and re-screening processes, dashboard data interpretation, report downloading, ABHA ID creation, and the functionality of the MO and CHO Portals.

Various queries and technical issues raised by the HCPs were promptly and effectively resolved during the session. Additionally, a detailed review of the overall NPNCD performance for the Ramtek block was conducted.

All participants actively engaged in the training. Dr. Smita Kakde concluded the session by expressing her confidence that this training will significantly help in improving the accuracy and efficiency of NPNCD portal data entry within the Ramtek block.

CAPACITY BUILDING FOR PRIMARY HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS IN NAGPUR'S PARSHIVNI BLOCK:

We're excited to announce the successful completion of a comprehensive training session for primary healthcare providers as part of the ICMR StAr NCD Project! On September 10th, 2025, a dedicated group of 30 healthcare professionals—including 8 Medical Officers, 11 Community Health Officers, and 11 Health Assistants from the Parshivni block in Nagpur—gathered at the Panchayat Samiti hall for this crucial capacity-building event.

The training covered two essential components for effective NCD management:

1. Diabetes Mellitus: Dr. Sujiv Akilagunta, Associate Professor and Co-PI of the project, delivered an insightful session on the types, symptoms, risk factors, and prevention strategies for diabetes. The session also included standard treatment protocols, a discussion of complications, and end-organ assessment. Dr. Mubashera Khan further enriched the training with a valuable segment on lifestyle modifications. The discussion also addressed real-world challenges faced by healthcare providers.

2. NP-NCD Portal: Mr. Saurabh Zhodape (STS, WHO) provided a hands-on live demonstration on making portal entries. He underscored the importance of accurate data entry and addressed common field challenges. Our StAr NCD project technical support staff also highlighted the significance of maintaining timely and accurate entries in the Screening-abstract and Treatment/Follow-up registers.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Ashirvad Nagpurkar, Taluka Health Officer, Parshivni, for his unwavering support. A special thank you also to the District Health Officer and ADHO of Zilla Parishad Nagpur for their support of this National Health Priority Research Project.

The active participation of all attendees made this training a resounding success, and we are confident that this will have a lasting positive impact on community health in the Parshivni block. 🙌

Successful NCD Screening Camp (by UPHC Pachpaoli) 🏥🩺

On August 20, 2025, a successful NCD screening camp was held in Buddha Vihar, Samta Maidan by UPHC Pachpaoli, specifically targeting community members aged 30 and older. 🏥 The event focused on the early detection of Hypertension and Diabetes through on-the-spot blood pressure 🩸 and random blood sugar checks by ANMs. In addition to these screenings, participants had their height and weight measured to determine their BMI and overall health status. 📏⚖️

The camp also featured awareness sessions to educate attendees on healthy lifestyle choices 🥑🥦🍎, diet, physical activity 🏃‍♂️🚶‍♀️, and the importance of regular monitoring of BP & sugar. Individuals with high readings were counseled and advised to visit UPHC Pachpaoli for confirmation of diagnosis. Around 50 individuals were screened during this screening camp! 👏

Supported by the StAr NCD Project team, AIIMS Nagpur, the camp was well-organized, ensuring a smooth flow of participants and contributing to its success as a valuable health initiative for the local community. 🤗 Thank you to everyone who participated! 🙏

A Successful Target Organ Assessment Camp at Mondha ! 🏥🩺👩‍⚕️💉🩸

On August 11, 2025, Health and Wellness Center (HWC) Mondha in Hingna block successfully conducted a Target Organ Assessment Camp for patients with NCDs. The event, held at the health centre premises, saw around 100 individuals diagnosed with Diabetes and Hypertension in attendance. 🏥🩺👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

This special drive was organized as a collaborative effort between the Health Department of Zilla Parishad Nagpur, the Department of Community Medicine at AIIMS Nagpur, and HLL Labs, under the ICMR StAr NCD Project. 🤝🔬

To ensure a strong turnout, prior information was disseminated to NCD patients with the help of ASHAs. The Gram Panchayat also played a crucial role by raising awareness through public announcements ("Dawandi") via loudspeakers in the village. 📢 Furthermore, the Gram Panchayat arranged seating and a shamiyana for the comfort of the attendees. 🏕️🪑

The health staff of HWC Mondha made good efforts to make this program a success. A dedicated HLL Lab technician and project technical support staff (of StAr NCD Project) assisted with blood sample collection. 💉🩸 For the convenience of the patients, transportation was also arranged to pick them up and drop them back home. 🚌🏡

In addition to the advance notice, many ASHAs conducted house-to-house visits on the day of the camp to provide a personal reminder to patients. 🚶‍♀️🚪

Dr. Pravin Padve (THO, Hingna block), Dr. Deepali Batheriya (MO, PHC Raipur), Dr. Bhojraj Padwe (CHO), the facility staff, the grassroots-level staff of HWC Mondha, and the StAr NCD project team have taken great efforts to make this camp a success. 🙏👍💯

🩸Screening Camp for target organ damage - Hingna block🩸🏥

Under the joint initiative of the District Health Officer, Zilla Parishad Nagpur, in collaboration with StAr NCD Project, Department of Community Medicine, AIIMS Nagpur and the Hindlabs, a blood sample collection camp for target-organ assessment has been launched in Hingna Block, beginning on August 7, 2025.

During these camps, HLL phlebotomists, with the support of the StAr NCD project team, are collecting blood samples from diagnosed diabetic and hypertensive patients. The samples are being tested for five parameters : CBC, HbA1c, KFT, lipid profile, and thyroid function tests.

To date, camps have been successfully conducted at four sites under PHC Raipur. Blood samples from more than 300 diagnosed patients have been collected so far. 📈

The initiative is planned to cover a total of 25 high-priority villages in Hingna Block. This collaborative effort represents a significant step forward in improving NCD care and assessment in the region.

UPHC Bande Nawaz successfully launches its first NCD Patient Support Group!

On August 6th, 2025, the healthcare team at UPHC Bande Nawaz (under Nagpur Municipal Corporation) successfully conducted the first Patient Support Group (PSG) meeting with the support of ICMR StAR NCD Project. This initiative focused on empowering patients living with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) through education, peer support, and improved access to care. The program was led by the facility staff, whose efforts and coordination made the event impactful and community-driven.

Highlights of the Meeting:
• NCD patients shared personal experiences and demonstrated strong awareness of their conditions
• Interactive discussions and health education activities related to diabetes, hypertension, chronic respirator diseases and coronary artery disease
• Selection of a group leader and clear role assignment
• Free blood pressure screening conducted by ANMs

Special recognition to:

• All ANMs and support staff, who ensured smooth organization and active participation

The formation of this PSG is expected to benefit the community by offering emotional and psychological support, motivation and treatment adherence, information and education, regular health monitoring, access to free medications, and a strong peer support system. The enthusiastic participation of community members reflects the growing trust in facility-based, patient-centered care.
Kudos to the entire UPHC Bande Nawaz team for their dedication and for taking a leading role in implementing this important public health initiative under the ICMR StAR NCD Project.
