Holi Care Guide: Protect Your Skin, Hair & Nails
By Dr. Rajshree Chaudhari, Dermatologist
Holi is a festival of joy, colour and celebration—but unfortunately, the synthetic colours used today can be quite harsh on our skin, hair and nails. With a little preparation and the right after-care, you can enjoy the festival while keeping your skin healthy and glowing.
Before You Step Out to Play
1. Oil is your best friend
Apply a generous layer of coconut oil, almond oil, or olive oil on exposed skin. This creates a protective barrier so colours don’t pe*****te deeply into the skin.
2. Sunscreen is a must
Holi is usually played outdoors. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30–50) on the face, neck, ears, and hands to prevent tanning and sun damage.
3. Protect your hair
Massage coconut or argan oil into your scalp and hair. Tie your hair into a braid or bun to minimize exposure to colour powders and water.
4. Don’t forget your nails
Apply a dark nail polish before Holi. It prevents colours from staining the nails and cuticles.
5. Wear protective clothing
Full-sleeved cotton clothes and sunglasses can reduce skin exposure and protect your eyes.
During Holi
• Try to play with dry, organic colours instead of synthetic ones.
• Avoid excessive rubbing of colour on the skin.
• Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
After Playing Holi
1. Be gentle while removing colour
Avoid harsh scrubbing. Use a mild cleanser or body wash with lukewarm water.
2. Oil can help remove stubborn colours
Massage coconut oil or baby oil onto the skin before bathing—it helps loosen the pigments.
3. Deep condition your hair
Use a gentle shampoo followed by a nourishing conditioner or hair mask to restore moisture.
4. Moisturize well
After bathing, apply a rich moisturizer or soothing lotion to restore the skin barrier.
5. Take care of your nails
Remove nail polish after Holi and apply cuticle oil or hand cream to prevent dryness.
When to See a Dermatologist
If you develop persistent itching, rashes, acne flare-ups, hair fall, or eye irritation, consult a dermatologist promptly.
✨ Holi should leave you with happy memories—not irritated skin!
Wishing you all a safe, colourful and skin-friendly Holi
