A hamstring strain is a common leg injury involving a tear in one or more of the hamstring muscles. A hamstring strain can range from mild to very severe involving a complete tear of the hamstring muscle.

Treatment for a Hamstring Strain:
Rest the leg.
Ice your leg to reduce pain and swelling.
Compress your leg.
Elevate your leg on a pillow when you're sitting or lying down.
Take anti-inflammatory painkillers. ...
Practice stretching and strengthening exercises if your physical therapist recommends you.

Recovery:
Timeframes for rehabilitation vary depending on the nature and severity of the strain. As a general rule, Grade 1 hamstring strains should be rested from activity for about three weeks and Grade 2 injuries for a minimum of four to eight weeks.

Causes:
Muscle overload is the main cause of hamstring muscle strain. This can happen when the muscle is stretched beyond its capacity or challenged with a sudden load. Hamstring muscle strains often occur when the muscle lengthens as it contracts, or shortens.

Exercises:
Make sure you do not feel any sharp pain. You should feel only a mild discomfort in the back of your thigh when you are doing these exercises.
