MIND OF IGNATIA AMARA
In this remedy there is great strain upon the emotional centers. Recurrent shocks develop sensitivity, an aversion of personality, and confusion in the normal rhythm of the thought mechanism and indecision in action, which leads to various forms of irrational behavior. Ignatia basically typifies irresolution throughout the mental function; a heart breaking jumble of contradictory impulses, immature in formation and destructive in action. This characteristic symptom places the remedy in a position for easy selection.
I know no more distressing form of mental sickness than that in which one is torn between the impulse to do or not to do. Although these people appear in the attacks to be aggressive there is no depth of action, the balance between the emotions and the will is painfully disturbed and presents the picture of despair. The apparent exacerbations lack the proper foundation, are more or less spurious, and end in defeat of purpose.
The physical erethism, which accompanies this mental state, produces a multitude of symptoms. Many of these persons have a kind spirit, are misunderstood by their associates, and are raked by the shellfire of indecision, which exposes to view the vicious and caustic elements to the exclusion of the good. Our duty in homoeopathy is to face the realities of the complex mental entity, ferret out the discord in the ebb and flow of the thought unit, and from a logical conclusion of what we need in the search of the remedy. When this is done, and often we fail in the effort, the physical accessory symptoms naturally fall in line.
Ignatia is oversensitive, impulsive and ignites easily destructive tendencies, has alternate moods (Lyc.) with an undercurrent of jealousy. These people love much but not wisely, project their idealism more or less into strange concepts of life relationship. There may be psychic shock, although generally in fluxion, corresponding to its pathogenesis and clinical experience. Its sphere of influence covers many cases of misplaced affection, disappointment, grief and financial reverses. I have found in my practice among the Indians and other primitive peoples an uncanny ability to early sense the approach of death. In their simple relationship to the great forces of nature some unexplained adjustment exists within which has been lost to most of us. When death finally struck there was a simultaneous outcry, which shook the old timbers of the domicile. No words can describe the pandemonium of grief, which poured out of the hearts of the relatives gathered about the deathbed. Nature was exacting her toll and the subsequent reaction was beneficial. We are indeed fortunate to have Ignatia and similar remedies at our command, giving a clear-cut picture of tragedy in the pathogenesis.
There is fear and timidity, a shrinking from realities, a desire to be alone. A man in the late sixties who had a long history of convulsion attacks of a minor nature, with intense fear, especially at night when waking, always burning a light, suddenly through death lost the companionship of his wife. He had always depended upon her comfort during these attacks and now was in great emotional distress. Ignatia brought about a quick and favorable reaction. As an evidence of the depth of action in this person attacks of migraine, violent in nature many years, have disappeared. A favorable reaction from the remedy shows in a definite stiffening of the moral fiber, clearer understanding of the particular problem, and lifting of the defeatist attitude.
Transitory ill humour and anger; fixed ideas; broods over unpleasant occurrences, alternating with laughing and weeping. He is obstinate and nothing satisfies him.
Natrum mur has long been recognized as a natural complementary. Calcarea, Sepia, Silica and Sulphur may follow; Lycopodium when there is fear, desire for company and the 4-8 p.m. aggravation. Sighs and sobs; sensitive to noise; morbid and inconsolable grief; apprehensive feeling in chest, stomach and abdomen, which interferes with breathing; silent anguish; paroxysms of terror causing her to shriek. Desire for solitude, with fear of strangers, who may cause her to be very angry. This remedy has violent anger with irresolution. Fear something will happen, and weeping ameliorates (Lyc). Contradiction
aggravates, becomes quarrelsome.
A woman having had a severe disappointment with marked despair, silent grief, inconsolable, feeling unable to continue her work, was given Ignatia, which took off the rough edge of the emotional shock, but did not bring the balance desired and which was necessary. The impatience she had was directed toward some minute finger warts appearing on the neck. Nitric acid was given with the most astounding results, clearing up the condition of shock, which again proves the remarkable difference in the similars we select.
There are spasmodic affections; in the throat with hysterical symptoms. The remedy covers a wide range of suppressed mental suffering. We have at our disposal truly curative remedies in all forms of emotional shock, the one under discussion ranking among the best. Homoeopathy brings a balance in a gentle way, eliminating the routine direct sedation. It is worth all the effort and study we put into the selection of the remedy to see these unfortunate people again regain the equilibrium which nature has intended for them to possess.
Ignatia is a medicine for grief and anguish. It relieves and heals acute emotional pain and physical complaints resulting from it. Situations that might ask for Ignatia are for instance: sudden loss of a loved one, death of a human being or an animal, r**e, assault, robbery, accident and scary, frightful situations, in fact anything that can cause you an emotional shock. Furthermore Ignatia is a beautiful medicine in cases of (silent) grief for several reasons, for instance feeling of being denied, disapproval, jealousy, homesickness. What makes Ignatia the right remedy in the above mentioned cases is the reaction of the person on what has happened: Ignatia suits when the painful situation remains very actual in the persons mind, as if it had happened yesterday, and the mind is focused on constantly thinking about it or reviving it.
About eight years ago an aircraft flew right into a block of flats in Amsterdam; still most victims of that drama daily go through the horror of an airplane crushing their apartment and setting it on fire within seconds. It remains a present situation for them; they cannot give it a place in their memory, in their personal past. Now in such a situation and reaction you need Ignatia.
Ignatia can show his/her emotional misbalance by hysterical behavior and/or unstoppable crying, but there can also be a silent grief with only sighing as a sign of internal suffering. In fact, frequently sighing is a keynote for this remedy. And there is a lot of fear, fright and anxiety in this drug-picture. Ignatia-characters have a highly sensitive nervous system, so it is not surprising that during stress their bodies react with twitching and spasms, a nervous constriction of the throat, trembling, nervous head-aches, nausea, sleeplessness and palpitations. Their mood changes quickly in opposite tempers and they react corresponding with paradoxical symptoms, like a nausea that disappears through eating, or extra urination with at the same time oedema (holding on moist in swollen parts of the body) or laughing at sad occasions like a funeral. The usually friendly Ignatia can change into an unreasonable, demanding and dictatorial person when ill or stressed. It is a good remedy for nervous breakdowns, whether they arise because of long-duration stress, living in unacceptable conditions, frustration, disappointment or long intense studying.
These people have something fine and artistic, they love beauty, are sensitive, quick-witted and conscientious, intuitive, they want to do everything perfect and they are very sensitive to criticism and disapproval. Their emotional balance is easily disturbed. The idealistic Ignatia can fly in fainting or in daydreaming. Another important data is, that Ignatia's tend to depend their own wellbeing on that of their loved ones. "If only he does well." The other one seems to be more important; there is a tendency to sacrifice their interests for the sake of a loved one. And in case of an unanswered love their whole world collapses.
This remedy is known as a remedy for women, but also a lot of men need it. Ignatia's do not want consolancy. After all, their whole mind is absorbed by their grief, so what will remain of them when you take that away, they fear...

HOMEOPATHIC TIP:
It is important to observe, that our vital principle cannot well bear that the same unchanged dose of medicine be given twice in succession, much less more frequently to a patient.
For by this good, effect of the former dose of the medicine is either neutralised in part, or new symptoms proper to the medicine, symptoms which have not before been present in the disease, appear, impending the cure.
Thus even a well selected homeopathic medicine produces ill effects and attains its purpose imperfectly or not at all.
Thence come the many contradictions of homeopathic physicians with respect to the repetition of doses.

By conveyance of the poison to the neck the cellular tissue is affected giving rise to dark and purplish hue. Cerebral congestion with violently throbbing carotids. Pale hue to the face.the patient has burning thirst with large draughts of water.
Nervous symptoms are present in all the spider- poisons, but tarentula irritation with excitability of the terminations of the nerves.

The playing of lively piece of music of music excites her to acting like one crazy. When there are no observers she has no hysterical attacks. As soon as attention is directed to her she begins to twitch.

Her mental states is not exhibited in violence and rage. On the contrary she nurses her troubles in seclusion and silence and broods over them until they prey upon her whole system. Sighing. Grief , fright, disappointed love may develop hysterical or choreic paroxysms.

ARSENICUM: useful in stubborn cases of chorea; uneasiness in the legs, must change the position of his feet all the time or walk about for relief.

STICTA PULMONARIA: has produced a sensation as though the legs were floating in the air.

ASARUM: induces a feeling as if the body were hovering in the air; it also causes shivering and coldness from any exertion. It has no similarity with tarantula but has some resemblance to Theridion, in that noises becomes intolerable. Asarum is so sesensitive that a thrill runs through the patient on merely thinking of the scratching of silk, which she is continually impelled to do.
