वैद्यकीय सुभाषित।।

धन्यानामुत्तमं दाक्ष्यं, धनानामुत्तमं श्रुतम् ।
लाभानां श्रेष्ठमारोग्यमं, सुखानां तुष्टिरुत्तमा ।।
(-- महाभारत)

अर्थ:
धनप्राप्ती करून देणाऱ्या गुणांमध्ये "कर्तव्यतत्परता" सर्वश्रेष्ठ गुण आहे;
सर्व धनामध्ये "विद्याधन" श्रेष्ठ होय;
हितकारक गोष्टींमध्ये "आरोग्य" सर्वश्रेष्ठ आहे;
सर्व सुखांमध्ये "मानसिक समाधान" सर्वोत्तम आहे!

Among all the means that lead to prosperity, orientation about all the responsibilities and readiness of executing them is the best mean.
Knowledge is the most superior prosperity amongst all.
Healthy wellbeing is the most superlative prosperity to be achieved.
Mental satiety is the highest prosperity that pleases.
(One should understand these prosperity and live accordingly)

Sugar -

The misinformation around sugar runs so deep that it's also a sad tale of how this ancient "nutrient" is now just looked down upon.
We just 'know' that it's harmful for 'normal' people and a killer for 'diabetics'.

The truth about Sugar:

Sugar has been celebrated as a "PanchAmrit"( पंचामृत) in our culture along with milk, honey, ghee and curd.
The weight-loss industry has brainwashed us to look down upon each of them and it is the reputation of sugar that has taken the maximum beating.
Sugar is not the white killer. In fact, ancient Egypt used it as a healer on wounds, way before antibiotics came into existence.

What's harmful is the way we are using sugar now--- in biscuits, pastries, cakes, chocolates, etc., where, other than the fact that massive amounts of sugar is used, there is an overload of preservatives, trans fats, salts, emulsifiers and lack of essential fibre and minerals.
Of course, we choose to overlook this fact and instead attach all harmful effects of these to sugar.
Then, all the weight-loss industry does is to create another market for 'diet' foods. The preservatives, trans fats and emulsifiers stay, and sugar gets replaced with a sweetener. And we are told that this mixture will make us thin and prevent diabetes and heart disease. Really??

So, one Gulab Jamun or Pedha won't kill you either.
What will harm you is that nutrient-bereft pizza, burger, juices, cookie or cake that you are unthinkingly. And that sweetener you virtuously put in your tea.
